I am currently at a CPG company doing brand management marketing, however, I would like to ultimately pivot to product marketing in tech. Something about tech in general and PMM excites me, more than brand management. For those who have previously been in CPG industry and have made the transition to tech product marketing, how did you do it? What kind of roles did you go for and what transferrable skills you emphasized in your interviews? Would love to connect if you are open to it on LI! I am also early in my career, 1.5yrs of full-time experience. What roles do you recommend going after? Also, I know tech is not the hottest industry atm due to layoffs, but I want to casually apply and see what's out there/interview processes with different companies. However, I do ultimately want to make the pivot at some point in the future. #productmarketing #CPGmarketing #marketing
Focus on industry experience, that is how I moved. Applied to roles aligned to my industry experience. Generally PMMs need 4-5 years experience launching products, owning gtm, etc. recommend having a good understanding of how marketing activities connect to sales cycles, strong positioning & messaging exp., and close collaboration with product management and other typical cross functional peers & stakeholders.
Agree with others commenting here. Focus on your CPG experience and building that right now. Take projects at your company centered around data and product positioning, etc. Figure out ways to be more influential with leadership at your current company. Give it more time to gain experience and for the tech industry swirl to stop. By the time you’re ready, you’ll be more positioned to be a PMM. I know a ton of CPG alum who transitioned to tech PMM. They all do great work, just gotta give it time as they’re later in their careers.
True true! Yea I was honestly not sure if it was a good move early in my career, but the thought of working in tech is way more exciting for me than CPG lol. Any chance you are able to connect me with some the CPG alum? I know blind is supposed to be anon, so nw if not!
warning: most tech pmm jobs are hot trash. CPG marketing runs the show and leads to GM/CMO/CEO positions but in tech you are a worthless turd usually the after thought of a PM and a cucc to sales orgs if you're in selling in enterprise. YMMV depending on company and role of marketing org/who you're selling to, but in most tech its a garbagio
lol no don’t do it do you see all of the layoffs happening? CPG seems like it generally has better job security
you not wrong icl, I have also thought about that alot
