I was just reading CTCI, and as a European getting ready to apply for internship positions in the US this statement caught my eye: “Additionally, for US positions, do NOT include age, marital status, or nationality [on your resume]. This sort of personal information is not appreciated by companies, as it creates a legal liability for them.” Anyone who can expand on that? Age and nationality at the very least seem like important personal details.
Why? The companies just want to know how you're authorized to work in the US.
US companies are discouraged to have this information as it can lead to bias, and weaken the assessment solely on your skill set.
Aahh makes sense now. Don’t wanna fuck up Amazon’s hiring algo, again!
Why is that personal detail important for a tech job?
I thought they might budget a certain amount for international hires, since they’d be more expensive. Fly in interviewee, fly over interviewers etc.
Maybe. But they can get that from ur address (in your resume) ur residence isn’t same as ur nationality. So don’t need nationality. I just put my address in the header or my resume. Right under my name with other contact info
Nationality is easy to know from your name and looking at your LinkedIn profile picture and education history. Age can be calculated easily by looking at what year did you graduate as a bachelor. This is not rocket science.
It's not. Still don't explicitly include it. If a racist/agist etx wants to go looking let them look
Now that you mention it. I don’t have a linkedin profile pic. I’m busy getting my linkedin up-to-date. Does having a professional pic help or no?
Welcome to the land of the free. You aren’t supposed to provide all this in your resume.
US hires based on merit. Welcome to freedom.
Hell yea.. But what legal liability is she talking about then?
It's illegal to discriminate based on gender, nationality, race, etc. If you're a good candidate and don't get called in/hired you can argue it's because they discriminated based on the info in your resume
