I’m moving to the bay area soon and trying to decide between SF and Oakland. I am looking for a “city feel”, bars open late, great restaurants, etc, and will be commuting down to Palo Alto once a week or so. Probably willing to spend ~3,000 for rent. TC: 254
SF for sure then. Oakland is a little less crowed and not that many places to go around. I would say move close to the mission area. Great night life, food, and entertainment.
I lived in sf before moving to Oakland for affordability and lived in Oakland many years. Sf is going to be way more options for food and drink and lots of different neighborhoods. It’s going to have more opportunities for you as a newcomer to explore. I’m thinking the commute to Palo Alto will also be easier. I really liked living in Oakland (lived there maybe 8 years?) but I think you should pick sf if you can find a decent place to rent in your price range and even opt for a lesser place at least for a couple years. Then later you might decide to get more for your money in Oakland down the line.
Bars aren’t open late anywhere in the Bay Area
I like Lake Merritt in Oakland. Nice amenities, and generally safer (for Oakland). Some people died from a shooting this week there, but that’s true of all of Oakland. SF is marginally safer, but crime is still really bad in certain parts. If safety is a thing, I’d look to suburbs vs the main cities. Not sure if 3k/mo will get you much though. I pay ~4k for an apartment in San Mateo (suburbs)
Lake Merritt is nice with lot of food options and Mission district in city. Safety is about the same. Mission is not the cleanest either but that’s SF for ya.
Do you want to get shot at or shat at? That’s really the difference.
Is uptown oakland a good neighborhood?

Oakland is not going to give you much of a feel of any kind.
