I'm seeing continued articles talking about people leaving California for other states. The two biggest arguments I see are taxes and cost of living in terms of housing. I moved from NYC to LA 4 years ago. I was used to NYC cost of living so the change wasn't that crazy. The biggest difference was traffic, but I learned the patterns and best times to travel. Also my wife and I don't have kids. Therefore I'm speaking in terms that perspective. I think kids change the game a lot. These are definitely good reasons to move but California also has a lot of benefits that I really enjoy and why I'm not moving just yet, unless I can find a place that can match California lifestyle. My Background: Born and raised in NYC until middle school. Moved to a small town upstate NY from middle to high school. came back to the NYC every summer until University. University in NYC. started my early career in NYC currently a software engineer Reasons why I'm staying - 1. the active lifestyle. there is no shortage of things to do outside. I'm an active surfer, rock climber, and hiker. The options located around me are many. I never really get board of having fun. I would say unless I'm working, I'm mainly outside enjoying life. 2. The food scene here is amazing. So many different options. I was used to this in NYC and loved it while I lived there. LA has the same variety of options just a little harder to get to in terms of driving. 3. The weather! if you live more to the coast the weather is great in LA. The dry climate is honestly so nice. Humid summers in the east coast sucked. and cold winters were not fun for 3-4 months out the year. 4. National Parks - California has some of the most beautiful nature in the united states. We go to a national park at least once a month. Again this fits our lifestyle since we are active people but just to have the option of exploring these parks often is so nice. 5. The people. this is hit or miss for some folks. I was lucky enough to build a good community around me that are reliable. Many people said that people in LA are "fake". I have definitely met those types of people while living here but for the most part most of my friends are reliable and not trying to impress or talk themselves up. funny enough majority of my friends that I made here all moved from different places as well. 6. cost of living? this is definitely a downside but again I'm ok with paying the high prices for access to things that I really enjoy. I'm also very used to high prices from NYC, so not a huge shock for me. Would love to hear other peoples thoughts on this :) also if you don't agree I would love to get your take as well. I think people leaving California for financial reasons is a solid choice but for me the outdoor lifestyle that LA/California has to offer is hard to find in the US. #misc #softwareengineer #move #tech
Depends what your priorities are. I think if it’s maintaining active lifestyle and outdoor activities that you enjoy, very hard to beat SoCal. Don’t let others’ decisions and priorities affect what’s best for you and yours. My wife and I are very likely to move because we don’t do that much in terms of outdoors activities and would like to get more bang for our buck in terms of purchasing a home and raising our kids. Also would be nice to be closer to family, all of whom are on the east coast.
Miami way better than NYC and California. Lived in all 3. Im 26 years old, SWE
I agree with your reasoning 100%. Those are some of the reasons that kept us in CA. If cost of living is not an issue to you, by all means I would choose CA every day.
We need more posts like this to convince idiots to stay in CA. Quit moving away and deal with the problems you made.
I will never leave CA by choice for all the reasons you mentioned. I prefer the mild weather in SF over socal though.
So, stay? If you feel like it’s a better option for you then do it, it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. Some people want to live in the Bay Area or LA, some want to live in Austin or Seattle, some want to live in Ohio or Nebraska. No one is wrong, people just have different likes and different priorities.
If you’re happy does our agreement matter ?
not really, i just don't understand why the media is making California look like a shit place to live.
If you’re a school teacher or working at Safeway it’s a shit place to live. They’re making 50-70k a year (I’m probably overestimating). life is shit here if you’re not a tech worker.
All 3 of them came back
I would prefer all Californians and New Yorkers stay put. It’s more of an infestation than exodus.
