What a time to be alive. I’m so glad the nanny state of California has finally stepped in to force misogynistic companies from keeping women away from the board room.

No unintended consequences here I’m sure.

  • This is a great move. We should do the same for other minorities, LGBTQ etc. :) After that, we should have quota for poor people. The board needs to understand their issues as well. Next step would be a quota for differently able people. This is all good first move in the right direction :)

  • Don’t forget the crack, heroin and meth addicts. They’re people too, and deserve a representative voice on Fortune 500 boards!

It’s good that none of the companies are actually incorporated in the great state of California. They’re all from Delaware.

The answer to progressive derangement is progressive derangement: fill the quota by having board members identify as women.
I'm looking forward to the day when progressives start a gender court to determine whether someone really identifies as man/women/trigendered polysexual otherkin, or rather fakes it for business reasons.

This is not going to be called Court. It need to be revolutionary tribunal, without right to appeal.

On a more serious note, the consequences are fully intended. they want totalitarian control. they will tell you what gender you are.

Why is everyone in this thread so threatened by the idea that 50% of the US population, 80% of purchasing power, and 60% of college graduates should be represented by one person on a company board? Seems like a great idea for the businesses, no?

If it’s a great idea for the businesses, why the government needs to enforce it
      Aug 31, 2018

Seems crazy that it’s not happening on its own and the govt has to enforce people doing things that are good for them. Like buying car insurance or saving for retirement. Sometimes people do dumb things and the govt does need to step in and help people make good decisions.

I think Iceland does this. And maybe not coincidentally their economy boomed after they hauled off all the men that were players in the global economic recession and tossed them in jail.

If I’m not mistaken, Germany mandates seats on the board to be from regular workers in the company. Keeps the company honest. I support this.

The Iceland situation is well studied actually. Clear net positive from having women on the board. Men are inherently more risk tolerant due to their hormones. Women are more cautious, balanced and pragmatic when it comes to money. A quote from “the boiler room” sums it up nicely, which is “don’t pitch to the bitch”. Because they don’t fall for the high pressured sales techniques.

Anyhow, I don’t see this as overreach necessarily. I think it’s better to follow Germany’s policy. Bring actual workers into the board.
