California public employees making ~300k

Not trying to hate but I guess this is one of the many reasons why taxes are high in California. if public employees like 'poop patrols' earn as much $184k https://www.forbes.com/sites/adamandrzejewski/2020/05/19/why-california-is-in-trouble--340000-public-employees-with-100000-paychecks-cost-taxpayers-45-billion/amp/ Do you think these salaries are justified? This one is always my favorite: BART janitor earns $272K. https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/BART-janitor-overtime-270K-pay-employee-salary-10484502.php

When you work a shit ton of overtime I think that’s acceptable. It’s not like that’s their salary. That janitor dedicated their time to earn that.

Intel bosshawg May 21, 2020

The janitor was sleeping in a closet collecting his overtime. https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/BART-janitor-pay-270000-Powell-St-questions-10911932.php

If you don't pay 6-figure salaries to public employees in CA you'll likely have almost no public employees there. How people are supposed to live and serve techies and other rich people in CA if they earn less than $100k?

Intel bosshawg May 21, 2020

The median household income in CA is $72K. That’s typically two salaries combined. https://www.deptofnumbers.com/income/california

They commute from Tracy or Los banos, or room with many others

Udemy jbrot May 21, 2020

That's fucked up. And here we are hating on techies lol

Roku .jsx May 21, 2020

Yep, at least techies make revenue and pay their workers with that money and not tax payer's money.

Udemy jbrot May 21, 2020

Exaclty!

Rackspace plastic_t May 21, 2020

Lol at people being surprised that Cali is corrupt. It's almost as if.... too much bureaucracy enables government corruption....

Microsoft 10c5292v May 25, 2020

High public servant pay == corruption? Interesting logic.

Google rawdogma May 21, 2020

summers off, early retirement, pensions, cadillac health, sky is the limit. just need clueless tax payers and votes (immigrants, government employees, other assorted members of beneficiary class)

Oracle 0Uni2 May 21, 2020

Some valid points, but a lot of nonsense. Pensions are ridiculous, especially with them virtually gone in the private sector. Heard garbage industry has huge corruption and this just proves it. University admins have no reason to be getting paid over $150k even end career, there's nothing that irreplaceable there. Not mentioned here, public university officials making over $300k and giving themselves raises amid tuition and grad student wage protests is f'd. But you really don't want end career teachers being paid low $100k? And do want an impossible city like LA to be run by a hippie altruist? Or think Santa Clara city wouldn't have a competent city manager poached by Silicon Valley for lobbying or public sector sales in a heartbeat? Seems short sighted.

That the people hating on these employees are blind people all of which make similar salaries shows you how pervasive jealousy is. If you think that job is easier and better paid, you should try to get it instead of whining like a little girl

Google AC/TC May 21, 2020

Except some of the government employees that get such good deals likely had connections, got benefits from corruption, or got grandfathered into a system that average people wouldn't get if they took the position. Ex: it's fairly common for new employees to be pushed into contract work for government instead of becoming full time employees.

Google rawdogma May 21, 2020

yeah just get in on the graft. that should scale well.

Lyft Simonsay May 21, 2020

This is slightly misleading. The costs to tax payers is not the same as their salary. Ex: Poop patrol workers make 70k in SF which is basically poverty. If we had 3rd world labor with people starving you wouldn’t need to pay so much.

This article feels like it’s someone that doesn’t understand that CA salaries are so fucked up because the gig economy came in and brought a shit ton of highly paid tech engineers with them causing an overall increase in cost of living. Like... it’s not an easily solvable problem.

Google AC/TC May 22, 2020

If California built adequate supplies of housing to account for population growth, the cost of living wouldn't rise so much. That seems like the place to start to solve this problem.

Microsoft 10c5292v May 25, 2020

Yeah, that would be good start. If rich techies didn't lobby against density so successfully.

The answer is simple really. Java dummies are paid as much as the market would bear. Public employees exist outside market forces, if you allow competition for those tax payer paid positions, as it should be, all those high salaries will evaporate.

Udemy jbrot May 21, 2020

Sure read Java for dummies and handle millions $$ transactions, good luck with that. Eng is actually hard, if you truly think about it.
