First, HW's waterfall cycle is super annoying. Everyone has the "throw it over the fence" mentality. There is too many teams you need to get together (including the ODMs) to meet the deadline so someone ends up getting shorted on their allotted time for a task. It's so messy. Also, feels like we are not really doing anything since the cycles are months long instead of 1 or 2 week sprints. Most of the time we are just arguing about the schedule instead of working. One last thing I have a gripe with is the use of excel and email for everything. Is it just NZXT or do all HW companies have this problem?
Hahaha..those are just definitions of HW job!
Out of curiosity, why did you switch from SW to HW? As an EE student I'm looking to switch from HW to SW when I graduate next year.
I actually graduated as a computer engineering major so I had a little exp with HW in college. I was introduced to a SW role for my first job and have been here in SW my whole career now. I thought maybe of trying HW cause of my degree, but turns out to be bad. I'm staying in SW for good after this
It's a very mature Industry so they do things their own way. I don't see it changing the way SW has changed
That makes a lot of sense. Good luck getting back into SW. I wish you much luck. đ
Thank you! I'm interviewing already
That's fantastic. PM me and let me know how it goes. :D
This sounds like an issue with your company. I've worked at multiple HW companies & never heard of these issues.
Do you really hate it or is this just something new to you that is pushing you towards growth out of your comfort box?
That sounds more cultural than industry. Iâve been in HW for two decades now and there have been managers who prove capable of team leadership and managers who toss it over the fence. The best Iâve found is to do your job on time and ask how you can help everybody else meet their needs. The challenge of changing something once itâs gone to PVT never goes away though. If itâs critical then change it. If itâs just âwould be nice ifâ then weigh those pros and cons. Schedule is tough when youâre tying performance component schedules to industry partners like Intel or AMD coming out with new hardware.

Go back to SW asap before they tag you as a HW guy

Gonna update my resume that I was in the SW department
