Hello All, I need some suggestion. I am working as Project Engineer (construction field) from the last six years. I am no longer enjoying my work and I am interested in learning something new and wated to step in tech world. I spoke with couple of my friends who are working in tech industry, advised me to learn some SQL, Python & Tableau and start applying for Data Analytics/ Scientist role. They mentioned that in 3 years I can make $150k easily. As I said earlier, I am no longer enjoying my work and to add, I am also not happy with my current salary (which is also a major factor). I am making around $106k + standard benefits. I dont think there is much room to grow in my field. I might reach $120k in next 4-5 years. My background: BS in Civil Engineering MS in Construction Managment Work Experience - 6 years in Construction Industry. Current Salary - 106k I came across a “Post Graduate Program in Data Science and Business Analytics” course, which is completely online and can be completed in 6 months. I am planning to do that course and learn good basics of Python, SQL and Tableau in Udemy. Could you please suggest me if this is right approach to switch careers? Is it easy to get into Data Science job? Thank you, It’s K

The job market is absolutely brutal right now
That’s a common path. The market is saturated at the entry level, so the first job is tough and takes persistence. You might have better lucky targeted companies that have DS problems related to your construction expertise. Job hunting gets much easier with a few years of experience.
Thank you for the response. I will try to target Data Science roles in construction/engineering firms.
