TLDR: Got PIP'd at LinkedIn. Apple is likely to offer me a contractor position, but I am also interviewing at other companies for full-time employment. Apple will force me to give them a decision before the interview process is over with the other companies. Can I get blacklisted by Apple if I agree to the contractor position and later back out after securing full-time employment at another firm? LinkedIn is doing silent layoffs. They PIP'd 10% of the company back in Feb/March, and they did it again just now. Therefore, I am looking for alternative employment. A recruiter reached out to me asking if I am interested in a senior MLE position at Apple. Thinking Apple was interested in me, I expressed my interest in the position. I had a call with the recruiter. She explained that Apple is looking to hire a contractor for roughly similar pay to what I currently make at LinkedIn. It would technically come with a promotion, but no pay rise and no benefits or stock. They are moving at breakneck speed, asking me to finish the interview process within a week of my initial call with the recruiter. I am currently interviewing at Intuit and several start-ups, but none of them could finish their interview process before I have to respond to Apple. I am on a visa, so I do not have the luxury of declining offers unless I am certain I have a backup. Can I get blacklisted from ever working at Apple if I leave within a month or two of starting a contractor position? Is it possible to work two full-time jobs on a visa without an employer figuring out? I am afraid that if I reject the contractor position at Apple and I do not secure one of the other jobs, I could be left without a job or a visa
LinkedIn tc and new tc?
LinkedIn TC: ~$155K ($125K base + ~$30k stock) Apple contractor TC: $75/hr W-2, so ~$155K assuming 40hrs/week assuming no vacations or overtime. If we include overtime, potentially $170K-$180K
Are you new grad? That looks low for LinkedIn @SF
OP, take Apple offer now. If a full time offer comes along later, you can always think about it. Rescinding doesn’t play well at Apple. You can shine even in a contractor position, and maybe even get converted to regular employment.
Take the job for now, do not update resume/linkedin until you are ready to stay put.
Do yourself a favor, don’t join Apple as a contractor. It is a novel slavery.
Take the Apple position and not join if you get better roles. We do not blacklist companies for doing layoffs. I do not see why companies should black list employees for not joining. In the end, it is all a business. Do what is best for you now.
Are you willing to leave something better NOW, for a MAYBE in the future?
I am willing to take Apple's contractor position NOW to save my visa and remain employed. What I am worried about is what to do if I receive a better offer a few weeks to a couple of months later. Contractors receive no benefits and are usually treated like second class citizens according to the testimonies I read online
I say capitalize for today. You’re securing your visa? Take apple. Next week you get more pay AND visa security? Take it Who knows if you’re blacklisted. Even if you aren’t- who knows if you’ll be able to clear interviews again? My first job out of college was apple. Imo it’s hard for contractors to convert. But maybe things have changed. Who knows
