I'm planning to go for masters this Fall (Sep 2021) and it sucks big time that I'll have to leave my job & hence bonus JUST BEFORE the MSFT appraisal cycle at IDC, India (happens in Sep end). I've worked really hard this whole year and it'd suck to leave a good bonus especially when I'm about to go broke with US student expenses. Classes start Sep 1st week and I'll probably need to resign around July to be able to serve the 45-day notice period before entering the US. (Haven't started the F1 visa process; will start in a month or so). I know it's probably illegal to work while on F1 visa but is it possible that I resign in Aug last week & then enter US while on my notice period? This way my notice period will contain the Sep month and I'm assuming people get bonuses while on their notice period. I won't be technically working on F1 since I've already given the resignation. Or maybe I can join the school a month after classes start after serving notice and getting bonus (will need some i20 modifications but not much idea here.) And if this whole thing is not possible, is there any other way for me to get the bonus in this situation? Would appreciate any help/suggestions. Op just curious. What is your motivation behind masters? Is it something like PhD or you want to shift to us? If you want to shift to us then why not L1?
I'm L61 right now. I can apply after becoming L62. I'll probably be low-balled during internal transfer with no new stock grants/joining bonus. Looking at 5-7 years time-frame, I think OPT+H1 is better than L1B+H1. The lost TC+1yr work exp loss should be compensated with the freedom to better negotiate and change employers in the future. Also, going from L1B to H1 should technically take more time than going from OPT to H1. Let me know if you think differently.
@poc21 H1B is picked by lottery, there are 100K master applications for the 20K masters quota. The remaining 65K are for both masters + others. So getting it through OPT has similar chances to L1B. Keep in mind that you will be seen as a new grad again after Masters and will be down levelled to L3 or SDE-1 unless you have a rockstar internship project.

Seems to be a bad move by OP, but everyone has their own priority.
OP could be an MBA as well. Many freshers join IIMs & then do a fast track MBA in USA for the geography/network change. I would say it’s completely subjective choice & I’m sure OP is smart enough to do ROI analysis. Dismissing her choice as a bad move is just rash @zzzzzzz

Someone already mentioned this - The fiscal period ends on June 30th, so if you're employed on that day, you will get the bonus. I left Microsoft Hyderabad to pursue an MS with 3 YoE. I got my bonus in the final settlement in September. Just ensure that your last working day is beyond June 30th. Mine was July end.
What about utilisation incentive and stock vest? And what if we are in notice period on 30 June

No, you can’t work on F1. You also can’t join school after a month, you have to be in US before your 1st day of the class. Only option is to defer your admit to Spring 22.
