I'll be joining Oracle, subject to my clearing the background check. I had written down my in-college startup project under work-ex in my resume. We were offered seed money by my university incubator, but we ended up refusing their offer. We were given office space in the incubator tho. Their BGC vendor contacted me asking for formal address of my startup, payslips, contact addresses and what not. I told them that we weren't formally registered. And sent them the proof of existence of my project/team (a certificate from my university incubator.) I hope they don't report this as a major discrepancy. Have I messed up? I didn't lie. This was the truth. Will Oracle rescind my offer letter?
I am freaking out quite a lot :(
I’m sorry to hear that. All job applications are stressful. But seriously if you acted in good faith the only thing you can do is wait and hope. To do otherwise will drive yourself crazy.
Thank you! :)
Your manager can override background check. So just relax. You will be fine in any case.
That's a relief. My new potential manager seems to be a good guy. I had talked to him about my startup in the interview
Hmm worst case they can only report it as unverified, what makes you think it's a major discrepancy? They get paid doing background check professionally. I am sure they have run into the same situations before too.
True. True. I am glad to hear that. What was worrying me was what if they think I am lying on my resume
Every time a background check is done I’m amazed at how poorly it’s performed as well as that it still passes. Typically they find out that someone with the same name as me doesn’t pay their bills, has misdemeanors etc. there never seems to be any clarification that this isn’t actually me, and I’ve yet to have an offer rescinded.
So glad to hear. So nervous. Hoping I pass the BGC
We recall offers when folks lie to us. As mentioned above, even “worse” BGC issues are usually left for the hiring manager’s discretion. Gross lies are flagged as such and are easy to spot (did not attend school X, never worked in company Y, etc.) Based on what you wrote, this does not seem to be the case. More often than not, 1st year startups never incorporate, so what... do folks don’t list that in their cv?... of course they do.
Thank you! Glad to hear that
The purpose of Background check is not finding discrepancies and withdraw an offer that already extended after so much effort and time and Human Resources have been put to come to this close. The purpose is merely double check everything is alright. When they find discrepancies, they’ll more likely to reach out and ask you about it. Then you can tell this story you just told us to them. Or if you really worry too much and don’t want to wait, just reach out to your recruiter and let them know. Your recruiter is always on your side, coz only when you are in the company will they get the bonus. They will help you out as much as they can.
More than likely they will just tell you, it’s ok, don’t worry, just like what they told me when I asked them about my university messing up my TA and RA employment durations.
Thank you RealLarry. Really glad to hear that. I am paniking more now, because For the first 6 months in my current company my title was something like 'Junior Analyst'.. and after which I was promoted to Technology Analyst, in my resume my whole experience here is mentioned as "Technology Analyst" Should have been more careful 😭
Plot twist: your Oracle recruiter is reading this post right now
I was also hoping that doesn't happen.should I take down the post?
If you got all you need then take it down and take a chill pill
Seldom do I tell anyone to start drinking, but you need to loosen up or calm down. The things you’re coming up with as major concerns are all so far from concerns it would be humorous if it wasn’t involving someone’s livelihood. You’ll be fine so long as your worry doesn’t make you do something stupid.
Hahahahaha. True. It's the first time I was resigning. Perhaps that's why. I am quite good now :) Thank you, though!
In case you haven’t been told previously, standard HR advise is to not resign until you pass any checks at the new employer. Sure it might push your transition a week or two, but it removes the risk of quitting and then not getting in to the new place.
@op hope everything was fine in your background report.
