Actually, if you take a look at pre-IPO companies, many of them got pretty bad media exposure at some point. Remember pre-IPO Facebook where everybody was saying user privacy was an issue?

I worked at Uber and my experience has been great. Media paints a different picture and I am sure it can be bad at certain teams. After all, Uber is a big company.

I’d say don’t rule Uber out, with the right team it can be a great experience.

Wearing a hat or saying yo = bro culture? So wearing high heels and short skirts = ho culture? Cos It goes both ways. If you want male peers to be professional, make sure your female peers are so too. Cos regardless of the company I’ve seen ho’s in tech field too. What’s with all these people suggesting companies to op? Everyone’s pitching in with their own ideas of “bro culture”. “We have a female CEO/Manager ”. How’s she better than a male one? Sexist much? A lot of women are so sexist these days with their condescending made-up terms like “bro culture” and “mansplaining”. Please don’t bring all that toxicity into the tech world. There are assholes in all fields but most of us are happy here without sexism and politics. Learn to ask non-loaded questions politely.

One of the reasons why I love the IT industry is that you don’t have to dress up in suit and tie and act all serious. We can relax and wear hats and color hair and chill and focus on getting work done AND have a great time. If that’s “bro culture” to you, then go work in a bank

Bro culture? Where the hell are all the bros? Bros workout, wear their hats backwards, and say “yo.” Where are these bros? I haven’t met a single developer that goes to the gym. These people are nerds and dorks, and I love them for it. I don’t know where the bros are. I thought they were Poly Sci majors. No?

@Applause - with 53 comments, the Tableau #MeToo thread is easily one of the most commented threads in the Tableau community (where the median is <20 comments per thread).

Also...many of the #MeToo respondents were careful not to identify what org they were in. So I’m not sure where you are getting the “most of whom are in sales” count.

I’m actually seriously disappointed here. I was hoping you’d have some inspiration or supportive “not-bro” examples. But all you have is retorts.

      Pointless and baseless retorts.

I think it’s also important to note that just because there are a lot of males at the company doesn’t necessarily make it that bro culture. I think it really drills down to the type of people that are being hired.

Can someone give some examples of behavior that counts as bro culture? Is it being male and being a cocky programmer (i.e. acting like people say surgeons act, that sort of thing?)

Yes, curious to what Bro culture is. It seems to be a pejorative term used against males. Maybe a good looking, cocky male who may not be a bad person? Why can’t everyone be cool and appreciate people for who they are and the differences. I’m friends with all types nerdy types, awkward types, bro types, dry humor types, hyper intelligent types, straight, gay, black, brown, white, who gives a fuck? Most people are good and have redeeming qualities if you get past your initial judgements. None are perfect..

As a woman do you actually feel more harassed than males. Or are you now realizing how many asses there are, and hoping it's because you are a woman. My wife worked in a primarily female company and she claimed the women gossipped like crazy about any hot male... So don't give me that... From what I have hear from multiple female managers is 1. Work life balance issues - welcome to tech 2. Too many males that never met a woman - welcome to engineering 3. Hipo females are gods...average ones get mortal status
