I found out today from the doctor that my sister has manic depression. I don't want to burden my father with bills...not sure what else I can do. I am working at Google. Not Amazon anymore
No, siblings can't be added
Only spouse and kids can be claimed as a family in company based medical insurance
Depends on how old your sister is. Is she a minor? Depending on the level of intervention, it might be outpatient and stabilize on meds. If its a bigger /longer problem and she’s a minor, or legally disabled, you might be able to claim her as a dependent with legal guardianship. Talk to a lawyer.
Unfortunately she is not a minor
Also, check with Google ERP - legal advice on stuff like this is typically a free consult (eg: adoption).
Op, is she your dependent?
No she is not.
Is your sister disabled or on any disability benefit?
Op how did you realize that she is bipolar but not just slightly depressed. Sorry I'm not answering your question but hope you can answer mine.
A lot of crazy things happened. Basically our family had to intervene and subdue her. Police were involved. We took her to the doctor and she's in the er ward right now. She's clinically diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
Xilnix - the depression part of bipolar is generally very intense, but bipolar people also have periods of unexplained high mood, energy, and impulsivity or recklessness. In Bipolar I folks, if the manic part goes unchecked it can develop into extreme paranoia, hallucinations, etc. I have a couple bipolar immediate and exte ded family members (Bipolar I and Bipolar II) and while the depression periods look like "regular" depression, the manic periods are quite different. Hope that helps!
Ok, you got my curiosity going. Also, former Amazonian (6-years) so its kind of a thing for me. Call EAP line for Amazon. Its complicated, and requires lawyers, but if you can be appointed as a guardian/co-guardian for your sister because of her disability I BELIEVE she’s treated as a dependent, just like a kid. You need a Judge and a bunch of filings to do that, and check with the benefits specialist, but that might work. EAP is free at Amazon, so it basically takes a phone call to talk to someone who would know. The state laws where she lives will have some bearing on that. Once that happens, she’s your responsibility until the guardianship is legally ended by a court. I THINk that also counts as a qualifying life even if you needed to change your benefits, and you’d also get a tax deduction. Don’t rush into that, because you also assume financial responsibilities as well - if she runs out and buys a car while she’s in a manic state, you’re responsible. I found this article - it covers the broad strokes, but geared more towards people dealing with elderly/dementia or developmental disabilities. Under ADA MH is disability, but there are probably legal nuances with insurance, etc. https://nationaldisabilitynavigator.org/2015/04/16/enrolling-an-adult-dependent-with-a-disability/
OP works at Google now. Not Amazon
This is similar to Google. I inquired for my sibling who is disabled and it’s such a complex process that I haven’t done anything with it.
only if you formally adopt her. you would need to talk to a family lawyer about that.
Sorry to hear and to say it’s not possible to add siblings as benefit dependent.
Damn...okay thanks
