Can someone explain google team matching?

A lot of people end up getting rejected because they werent matched with a team. I’m wondering: What happens in this stage? If you are a team that is looking for an engineer, and have a pool of people who have passed all the interviews, what would make you not want to choose someone? Is this entirely dependent on whether you like the personality of the candidate at this point or are other factors weighing in?

A large number of things can go “wrong” in team matching. Often we just don’t have enough openings for all candidates. Depending on your specialization there may just be no current open positions in the office of your choice. In terms of positions being available but not wanting to take a candidate that passed HC, could be any number of things. Candidate can be too junior or senior for the role we want. Candidate’s expresses career path doesn’t work with our plans (ex. candidate states that they aren’t interested in ever managing but we are looking for an IC to grow into a manager). Occasionally you may reject a candidate for soft skills reasons. I have seen some whose technical skills were excellent but were rude and abrasive (it’s an interview, but you’d be surprised how many candidates just can’t help themselves).
