I'm graduating next April and have a few new grad offers at around 230-250k. It sounds like a lot but when I calculate how much I'll have after tax + rent + food + etc, I'll only be saving around 80k per year. Even with crazy stock appreciation, let's say I save twice as much (160k) per year. That's not even that much. That means four years later when I'm 26 years old, I'll only have 640k NW. That's nowhere near enough to have any kind of wealthy life style like living in an apartment overlooking central park, driving a mercedes, retiring at 40, etc. It seems like the only way to be truly wealthy is to start your own company or get lucky joining a unicorn early or being a quant at JS/HRT/Citadel. But in most of these cases, you also have to work harder than a normal tech worker. What do you guys think? I want to reach 5 milion NW asap so I can retire. At this rate it will take me decades. EDIT: looks like this post became trending? Why are there so many comments all of a sudden! And why do so many people think I'm lying. The standard new grad offer at Facebook this year is around 230k. Look at levels.fyi if you don't believe me. I had 4 such offers including one tier-2 trading firm and used them against each other to negotiate up to 250k. The only company that refused to negotiate is Facebook. Secondly, why are so many people triggered? Just because you are happy at your low-prestige, low-pay job doesn't mean I am okay with that. But many here bring up a good point about investing. Indeed, I won't only have 640k NW at age 26 and that makes me feel better. I think 1 million at such an age is realistic. EDIT 2: If you have a low-prestige, low-pay job, you should log off Blind and do Leetcode. Stop complaining here about how I am delusional, etc. Unless you work at Jane Street or HRT or similar and make >500k with <3 YOE (in which case I totally concede that you are better than me), you cannot insult me.
Invest all ur savings in crypto and hope it takes off
I can totally understand why people YOLO'd into gamestop earlier this year. There are so few ways for young people to make a good living anymore. I will have to do this too
Or better yet create a crypto.
I didn’t make 240k till I was 30. And I’m still doing fine (31).
What is your net worth?
Doesn’t matter. I have a good life.
You will get paid more once you have your promotion. You can also invest in stocks, etc. My new grad offer was lower than yours but I am $1M right now at 26
Can you break down your TC per year since new grad? I'm unclear on how much refreshers + promo affects TC and how much is stock appreciation.
How did you do it? Care to share any advice
You haven’t graduated yet and you want to retire? These Zoomers I tell you!
OP wanted to retire in pre-KG.
I got one better, OP wanted to retire at conception. Sorry, OP.
I worked at a golf course when I graduated making $9/hr
Welcome to the rat race! Nothing is for free.
Being able to save 80k a year is already a lot especially right out of school. I know people who make even less than that. Becoming a millionaire requires effort and you’ll get there eventually. Just take it one step at a time and who knows your plan may start shifting too because your lifestyle and goals change.
Lmfao
Take a bow man! I genuinely appreciate your ambition at this young age! You will eventually do great things in life if you sustain this hunger over a long enough period of time!
It’s not ambition, it’s delusion. He will never be truly happy
It’s delusion. I don’t think chasing money like OP is will truly bring him happiness, there is always more money to be made. We’re already making a crapload of money which can buy us more than we need, and OP is still complaining he doesn’t get a penthouse overlooking Central Park 🙄
You sound so delusional lol be grateful this industry is paying 3-4x more than others to begin with
Yeah seriously. Go out and see the world a bit first. Retiring early is not everything in life.
More like 5-6. Lots of non cs people make 40k
