I was recently impacted by the layoff at Cisco today. Purely for reasons of not wanting a resume gap is it possible/not unheard of to offer to trade severance $ for being left on the official rolls for a longer time but not paid anything or no benefits. The way Cisco’s layoff works is 60 days left on the payroll then + 4 months severance. Has anyone ever negotiated giving up a month or two of severance in exchange for say being listed on the payroll unpaid for an additional 3-4 months? TC:0
Take FMLA and I think you can extend your end date (not sure)
Can you do that after you’ve already been notified of the separation date coming in 60 days?
It’s usually not worth the hassle for them. If you are on the payroll, then they have to pay you.
Resume gap doesn’t matter
Typically, employers do not grant such requests, but it is still worth a try. I have only witnessed it once, when a VP went out of their way to offer a few months' notice period without affecting severance. This gesture can be of great help to individuals who are on an H1B visa.
No one cares if you were laid off. Really. Say the whole org was. Just study or change your career path. This is the universe giving you an opening to make a better life. I know it sounds crazy- but it’s happened ! The Earth’s still spinning though!
Its difficult time.. but hold on buddy. You will sail through. Which roles were impacted Eng / Mgr / Sr Mgr / Dir ? Is cisco overstaffed ? Why did they chopped off such massive number ?
4months severance pay is standard across Cisco?
Technically it’s 6 months. You’re not expected to work during the 60 day notice period. In addition to PTO being paid out many people are close to getting 8 months. Great plan for anyone near retirement. Just do a 1.5-2 year stint at Cisco and ask to be put on the next layoff list. You can retire 7 months earlier
