What would MBAs do ? There are only so many business development jobs, haha. Let’s stop MBA creep to engineering management.
It's an Amazon thing Outside Amazon no one does that
This is common in many other companies. They promise a lot, don’t understand the concepts and stress out when engineers don’t deliver.
They don’t need to be able to write great software but they need to understand when I explain technical challenges I’m encountering.
I have few managers, who don’t understand the terms and don’t want to. But only ask, can you deliver, yes or no?
That would be so infuriating from a manager. I already have that from my TPM and I’m like boy you shouldn’t have that T in your title.
Are we taking the job of chatGPT now ?
Elon is an idiot.
You are smart and Elon is an idiot. Public people go to the arena and make stuff happen, and anonymous people complain that they are idiots
I guarantee I am better at my specialty than Elon. I don't need to pretend to be smart outside of my area of expertise. That is what separates the folks like me from the Elon's of the world. Stop simping for billionaires. They're not gonna share their money with you.
Elon is being used by the industry to fix tech slackers back into shape. Elon is loving his new savior role.
Saving Twitter by tanking over half of its value in 6 months, typical right wing nutjob
@salt_water you're just not playing 5 dimensional chess like all the other smooth brain doge coin appreciators.
This is the only thing I agree with this lunatic. (Technical excellence)
The thing is coding, is not enough. Mangers should know the technical side, but should more importantly know how to “manage” whatever that means… in other words engineering and engineering manager are different jobs.
Right, not just coding but tech expertise in general. I always believe a manager should be able to do their immediate report's job at the bare minimum, helps become efficient and earn respect. Team dynamic is so much better if the team respects the manager. Amazon fucked up the SDM position in general. More than half of the SDM converts here are not capable of handling even simple system design nuances
I can… but should I?
Please, no.
Let me push to prod!!!
Elon is a moron so none of this warrants any response. But the analogy is incredibly stupid - it’d be more a “cavalry captain” who’s running around the field fighting alongside their reports. EMs should clearly have some background as a SWE. But if you think high leverage eng roles are about writing code, you have no business even being a senior IC, let alone any leadership.
LOL. He didn’t say anywhere “writing code”, he said “technically excellent”. 1. Learn to read 2. Find psychotherapist and start working on your compassion 3. Also find gf, you didn’t have sex for a while since you are this much frustrated Thank me later. Life is beautiful ❤️
Thank You Microsoft Legend17 for addressing this incredibly stupid person who didn’t think before he/she responded.
Stupid reasoning. Manager’s job is manage people.
And that’s how you will never be a good manager. Thanks God you are just IC
Meh. Technical skills are overrated. Being a “Good” manager to ICs are overrated. It’s not a manager’s job to impress ICs or make their lives easier. Once you reached certain levels it’s all about a** kissing and playing politics. Only ICs believe there are meritocracy. Also FYI, I also have involuntary management responsibilities. My technical skills were useless at managing people.
Team managers definitely. The higher up you get in the management chain the less it matters.
