Looking to connect wirh other Canadians living in the US who may have long term plans to return to Canada. Hoping to learn and share best practices around investing, managing assets, and taxes. Is there any interest out there?
Am Canadian and want to return to Canada someday but not sure if it will be possible. Comp difference is night and day (I'm probably 4x what I could get up north) and cost of living remains high. On a GC now with about 2 years left until I can convert to citizenship, after that I could return long term - but with the tech industry in such an anemic state in Canada unsure if it'll be realistic or just career suicide. Right now maximizing savings and investments to soften the blow of real estate in Van/Tor if I have to bite the bullet and take a 80% pay cut.
I hear ya about the pay and COL and building savings. There has to be some point though when you have enough saved that the prospect of living in Canada and benefits that come that like healthcare and pension outweigh continuing on in US. Personally I dont know if retirement is that event, or if sooner. Regardless, i’m keeping the time frame flexible and interested in learning what I could do now in order to maximize that flexibility. Building up assets aggressively in US and figuring it all out layer like you suggested sounds like a feasible approach, wondering if there are other optimizations
Is pension a function of country or just employer?
me too and agree as others. but surely if i decide to retire then definitely return to canada but not now
I think social security contributions in US can be counter towards CPP in Canada, so there is that.
I’m planning to relocate to Canada too, but I feel the tech scene even if growing is way too nascent for a meaningful career.
I’m canadian but am not sure if I want to move back or not. Why do you want go back to Canada eventually? One thing to consider is getting a visa. I’m still on a TN but from what I read turning that into a GC isn’t that hard; just requires careful planning and risk management on ones part.
Want to move back because BC feels like home. I have GC.
Anywhere you go can be home if you build a good life with the people and experiences you enjoy.
