Can't make it as L6

Low-performing L5 engineer here who practiced a lot of behavioral interviews and managed to land a few L6 roles at some large start-ups (think snap, Instacart, Robinhood, Uber, etc.). Worried about getting fired because I honestly can't perform at L6. What should I do? Also, since I'm leveled at equivalent L6, the comp can go much higher than 550k, but I'm scared to negotiate as it might set higher expectations. Current TC: 600k+ due to stock appreciation TC after cliff: < 400k New offer TC: ~550k

Count your blessing and make hay

Meh, it's not like promo is 100% competency based. It's not, there is so many moving parts that can affect your promo packet. Take a shot at the new job and see what happens. I am sure youl be fine.

How common is it to get piped in a year at snap

You have landed L6 offers with strong companies. That’s not by luck and just from behavioral interviews. I suggest take up the challenge. You might not be in the right setup in Google to perform at full potential.

What's your motivation to go L6 other than money?

Google C0ngratbot Jul 16, 2021

do you need motivations other than money to change jobs?

Hell yes. There could be many many reasons.

Take it as a blessing and fight imposter syndrome. Learn on the go, be modest/honest and you’ll learn through some pain. Seek guidance where needed. Don’t doubt yourself till you actually see unsolvable problems.

And don’t worry about money. Expectations are set by level, not by what you’re paid

Yo, op. Companies that are public aren’t startups.
