Career Growth Path at Akamai?

Cutting edge tech used? Are people innovative? Will I learn many things? And how is the promotion schedule for an SDE/SDET/SWE II? I saw reviews said it has great WLB, but I really don't want to be coasting.

You can easily coast, but don't come in looking for a straight forward career growth path even if you put in the work.

Exactly. Lot of politics

🥜 TC, WLB is good but if your motivated you’ll be frustrated that your working 3x harder than everyone around you. Tech stack is actually really legacy.

So many left in 2021 due to stagnant career growth.

Amazon ARkl51 Nov 14, 2022

Yup I left because my middle managers were all coasting and useless. Just we’re there because they had been at akam forever. I moved to Amazon for the same role and 100k more in TC. Really sad because if Akamai promoted the right people and paid top talent what they are worth I would have easily seen myself staying

Is there any team/department/division good for career growth? Or all of them suck?

Akamai Technologies jEQl33 Nov 15, 2022

I don't think we're that far apart. I was just addressing the opportunities, not the compensation. A lot of these replies made it sound like Akamai is where people go to die and I don't think that that's true at all. What I'm saying is you'll have opportunities for new and interesting roles of your choosing where you will learn marketable skills which you can use at Akamai or choose to take elsewhere. Sounds like you did have some of those opportunities, though you did not find the pay to be what you wanted. I'd call that a separate issue. If you're looking for top tier pay, then I think it's well documented you won't get that here. The pay is fair (and in my experience you'll get more for working more but I understand circumstances will vary). Really the only question is whether an individual finds the wlb makes up for that gap in compensation.

@jEQl33, thank you for the explanation, and that's what I was wondering. I am not looking for the very top pay like Google, but I hope I can gain valuable skills and domain knowledge in my early career life. Can I private message you for a further discussion?

Sure
