I'm currently at Microsoft. Been there as a support engineer for 5 years now have about 6 yoe. With developer background I have consistently and cleary gone above and beyond in my requirements every year in terms of impact along with doing significantly more than any other engineer on the team. I am still a level 61 (started @ 59. I was supposed to be pushed to level 62 maybe 9 months ago but due to budget cuts....yeah Anyway even though I have clearly and significantly gone above and beyond my role and colleagues in terms of work. However, when it comes to promos I am still promoted based on a regular schedule like any average or below average engineer. ~18 mo. timeline. What is the point of going above and beyond? Or creating impact? When engineers who do half of what I do, if not even less than half end up getting the same promos with the same timelines. (Likley probably make more than me considering newer employees get comped at current market rate) My base salary is just a little over 110k. Tc around 150-160 Any advice? Am I getting screwed over? Is there anyway to demand more? What should I do? #Microsoft #tc
Best thing to do is talk to your manager to understand what they need to get you promo’d. You can’t really “demand” anything. You can ask. You should be prepared to walk out the door if they say no.
Leetcode. And interview at AWS.
Do your manager and their peers share this view that you have outsized impact? If so then sure ask for star treatment. If not then you need to get them on your same page first, either by better communicating your impact or recalibrating your view of what impact actually matters.
Get another offer. Amazon used to be fairly easy, maybe they still are. MS will likely match if they want to keep you. This is what I did, though I still left like 6 months after forcing them to pay me a decent TC.
I'm kinda in the same position and can only ask your manager. I'd look outside the company for a good fit position and you can always come back
I’d definitely leave. I’m about to do the same. Support is draining
What else do u want to hear? Just leave.
