I’m mid 40s, L6 at Amazon, working in Prime Video org. 200 TC in Los Angeles. I need more money. Current role feels dead end, nobody gets to L7 from what I hear. I’m a sharp person, quick learner and considering either going for OE or maybe doing as little school as possible to move into tech — always had a mind for coding but was lazy about math in school. Ideas? Advice? Heeeeeellllp.
Yea man you need to jump, I’m 24 making 280K TC. Not showing off but just saying what you’re missing out on.
280 at Microsoft?!!!!!
Do you work on ADF
Similar scenario Cloud didn't help much with growth As long as you are in primary projects with a good leader it seems hard to grow
What’s your role?
Post Production
I mean. What’s your job function. Are you an SDE? PM? SA? Not sure I recognize this if this is a job function.
Oh no! You need to go. How long have you been at AMZ? I was at the same company for 18 years and finally woke up and realized that loyalty is not it. Now I’m in my 50’s and waaayyy behind friends my age but also doubled my salary by leaving!
Are you SDE? Numbers don’t add up for SDE? Or you have been HV1or HV2 for long time now
I’m on the business side as well, with similarly comical pay compared with the Blind engineers (who are the competition in terms of real estate purchases, who drive up the cost of stuff like childcare for you, etc.). Slightly more than you but not really clear of 230-240 based on recent stock price. OE seems the most accessible way to 2x your pay, but it’s pretty stressful! Nevertheless, still better ROI probably vs. learning software engineering, lateraling into an L4 SDE role, groveling for a promo, etc. Product roles aren’t a bad shout either, but you’ll first need to switch into that job family, play it up that you’ve been doing that all along, and go through a not easy/fair recruiting process at competitive firms to actually see pay go up.
OP, the harsh reality, unless your role is technical in nature, or you offer a truly unique, one-of-a-kind skill set, there really is no incentive to pay you more. The truth is, they can find a kid in his/her mid twenties to happily fill your shoes for <= the pay. Amazon doesn’t really reward tenure. I recently made the jump to L7 (after 2.5 years at L6). Yes, it’s incredibly difficult to make the jump, but it can be done. However, you will need exec (L10) sponsors and a truly differentiated skill set to show you deserve more.
If you need more money, move out of California.
Unproductive. Don’t leave CA! I’d leave Amazon and boomerang back for more money after finding something else. Look at Microsoft. Youll be making more than that without your equity and bonus.
Or you can not pay 13% state income tax to a state that's slowly rotting.

Don’t you have equity too? TC for l6 is around 500, isn’t it? Join another video company - snap or Netflix
200 includes the equity 🤦
TC for non-SWE L6 is nowhere near $500K
