Hey all the brilliant data scientists here. To keep it short, mostly I run sql queries, and I am overwhelmed by the resources available to learn Data science. What would you advise me to start with to create a solid foundation for this career transition? TC:110k East Coast YOE: 5 years (first 3 years in India, next 2 years in US)
OP, what's your YOE? Are you in Midwest? 110k seems too low for BayArea.
I am in east coast, 2 YOE (after post grad), 3 years after engineering, total 5 yoe. Yes, I know it’s low :( hence trying to transition into better profile.
Which city? Leetcode and become an SDE for high TC
U can go to ICC and they can make your resume Look like a machine learning professor in Stanford.
International Cricket Council?
Indian Cricket Council
Easiest way is to make friends with the leaders of the data science department at your organization. They will pull strings for you. Ought you though? I did this. I wish I just left and got paid more to be a sql monkey.
I am going through Hands-On Machine Learning with Scikit-Learn, Kerala, and Tensorflow to get a better grasp of Python’s libraries and DL frameworks and it seems to be easy to read while still presenting a decent depth. You don’t get a shiny badge to put on your LinkedIn or anything but you stand to learn something.
U r the money all other zoo's looking for
Hahaha, doesn’t seem like looking at the job postings around me
How do you become a SQL monkey? I want to get better at it
I guess you are already better at it otherwise FB wouldn't have hired you. Are you a data analyst?
Mostly banging you head against production tables with a bunch of gotchas and no meaningful documentation until you grok it. You can learn basic SQL in a weekend, advanced level stuff in a couple weeks or less... but actual SQL expertise comes down to knowing where your data lives, how it maps to other data, and weird idiosyncrasies in your data set. That takes months / years.
Move to a FAANG as a data analyst , product analyst, BIE with your current skillset. Then move to a DS role within the company. This is the path I followed. My background is exactly the same as yours, 3 years at desi analytics consulting firm, EXL after post grad. Then jumped to Amazon, Business analyst role and worked my way to DS, doubling my TC on the way.
"Desi analytics consulting farm" in India?
Do you have masters in Analytics in US?
Learn machine learning and become a data scientist or learn Spark, Hadoop etc to be a data engineer.
I'm in a similar situation. DS is really broad and I think you have to choose an area. For example DS Analytics (product expert, experimentation design and analysis), DS full stack (own end to end, build pipelines, product stuff, breadth not depth), Applied Scientist (create models), MLE (create and ship models). The last two are basically SDEs with strong math/ml skills. I kind of just threw a bunch of shit together off the top of my head and there's obviously some overlap. But basically pick something and build your own curriculum. ie for DS analytics learn the needed econometric models, stats and probability, build product sense.
Are you a data analyst at Amazon?
Thank you Amazon, I will dissect your answer and look into individual topics. Really helpful! From outside I don’t understand what these different areas have to offer, it’s all over “choosing engineering major” experience again 😅
