Cyber truck killer: Chinese version of EV truck
I’m an l6 AS and have been super confused about what comes next after this position. I dont see myself doing research for the rest of my life. My inclination is towards owning/developing a business and all I see around me is bureaucracy. Perpetually helping skips grow. I don’t complain they pay me well. Though I work closely with business partners I’m still the science guy giving them insights. I’m definitely not going to try for an L7 AS. My team cannot support an l7 imo and personally I’m not going to spend my youth researching and publishing. I considered an MBA but not very clear on where that would take me. I’m getting paid $500k in hcol now and feels like I’ve boxed myself into a trap. Where do I go to sustain this pay and satisfaction of doing what I want. Current and Ex applied scientists - please help me understand your path to growth.
Anyone earning 500k is not boxed into a trap.
You either politics to get promoted or try and network and get funding for your own thing. That’s the only path upwards. No way around it.
Politics is a muscle I’m yet to develop. Network + fund seems lucrative to my naive eyes but wouldn’t know where to start.
Attend all those tech meetups, talk to current startups and other people at the event, use YC cofounder match or other founder match services. It’s not easy at all, and anyone whose relatively successful seems to have a close, tight network. Even if you get pre-seed, it’s hard to get people to care about your product. So you really need to develop social skills more than technical skills.
Become AS manager and benefit from other people doing research.
This could be one way forward. Beyond benefiting from other people’s work, this could give me a good opportunity to lead a few (supposedly) like minded folks towards a common goal.
Change jobs periodically. Only apply to companies with fully remote positions. Move to LCOL and work remotely. For me next step is to start a new company and quit my job if it starts showing potential. TC 650k
