Peaceful Protest Hasn’t Worked and Has Been Met With Aggression.
Started coding around 29, got my first tech job at 30, and I’m now 33 and at Meta. I’m a full-stack dev specializing in front-end, but I’ve been wondering if I should keep plugging away at this path or branch out into a related field like AI/ML or even cloud/infra, both of which I’m familiar with but lack professional experience. Being early in my tech career but in my 30s, I’m feeling the pressure to make a decision fast. Assuming that I don’t move to a management role, what are some good approaches to take? Become a 30-something full-stack specialist, jump ship to AI, or…? #software #engineering #swe #career
React + Python + cloud
React’s covered, I’m decent with Python for backend and data science/ML stuff, and I’m familiar with AWS and am planning to build out a project that uses it fairly heavily. I feel like staying on the full-stack path but branching out into relevant infra and architecture (e.g. cloud, maybe an AWS cert) is the way to go. Wondering if it’s better to keep AI/ML as more of a side skill rather than trying to pivot again.
Meta is laying off this week
Time to look at the 50 recruiting emails I got last week 😂 Fortunately I’m involved in some core projects that affect how the company operates (with barely any other engineers), so I should be in the clear even if the rumors come true.
Why does your age even matter? No one’s going to give a shit that you’re 30 something and most people you work with won’t even know your age. It’s level and experience as a dev that matters. No one is going to give you extra points for being old, and if they penalize you for being old it’s going to be a pay day for you once you’re 40.
Mostly for my own personal timeline. I’m starting a family so I want to make sure that I’m in a stable career path with a) room to keep growing and b) plenty of opportunities as I get further in my career
TC?
Oh, for fucks sake.. this again.
What are you trying to optimize for career-wise? Stability, money, or something else?
Mainly stability, since I’m married and have a kid on the way. Want to make sure my skill set is always in demand and that I can keep working on interesting challenges.
