Close friend works at Intel. PhD in Experimental Physics (laser optics/material sciences overlap). Hates it at Intel. Yoe (industry): 1. TC = $120k. Thinks the role is just baby-sitting. Can he transfer within Intel? If so, into what role? He likes more hands-on design instead of process/operations in the fab. Would product engineer be a good fit? I heard that Apple was poaching engineers from Intel. But what is a good equivalent in the Apple space? Thank you! #semiconductor #career #fab
On a serious note; the advise I would give your friend is to join a startup doing cool technology. If he is not worried about visa etc.
Thank you!
Op: tell ur friend to look for display optics, panel optics role at Apple within PPO org. He could also look at camera optics design - i am not familiar with those. There are also some RD roles in photonics but those are few.
Could also be a fit for Display Investigations
You are awesome! Thank you this is definitely what he’d be interested in! :)

Are you an unhappy Process Engineer too? It seems like this role takes in PhDs and makes them do really mundane work. Edit: Are you exploring other options? If so, what?
Ya, when I graduate with my PhD I applied at intel but never heard back. Now I feel like I dodged a bullet.
GTFO ASAP
Strong advice. Would you mind elaborating please? What is your role at Intel? Edit: And gtfo from Intel or from this role particularly?
He can go into biotech imaging in a medical device company. That is what I did and have a similar background. The R&D is very rewarding.
Which company?
Topcon, Zeiss, Optovue, and tons more. Just search job boards.

Ask him to join the sad club :(
All the intel engineers seem to feel this way. Fabs operation must be rough
