Hi everyone. I only have one more attempt at H1B next year (did not get picked up in 2021 or 2020). I've been at my current company for 2 years now. I feel that I'm getting stagnant. The work is decent, but the compensation feels paltry compared to what my friends are making at FAANG companies. I am getting interview opportunities but most of them are refusing to interview once they know that I only have one attempt left at H1B. Q1) Even if a company is willing to interview, do you think it is a wise decision to move companies at this stage? Additionally, my current company is willing to move me to Canada, but my compensation is most likely to change and I'd receive even less. I am thinking of asking a 20% pay raise and stock options while I'm still in the US. I think this is a good time because my performance has been decent + lots of other folks are leaving my company + I am in a position to massively benefit the company by working on their infrastructure. Q2) a. Do you think it's reasonable to ask for that much pay raise? b. And any tips on having this discussion? Lastly, I'm concerned that my career will stagnate if I move outside the US and to Canada. But Canada seems to make sense long-term considering it's much easier to get a green card there. Q3) a. Should I opt for Day 1 CPT and try my luck with H-1B two additional times? b. Should I move to Canada, get my green card (which would mean I need to stay for ~2 years), and have my company apply for H-1B in the lottery? Don’t “ask for 20% increase and mo stock” , have an honest convo about compensation with your manager to see if there is a pay adjustment is possible to keep up with market standards. also you being in this situation is a HUGE leverage for your company
Thanks for the sensible advice. Asking for too much at once might put my manager off. Will keep it generic and only mention the numbers if asked specifically. Indeed, the company has a huge leverage. Their approach to my request will let me know if I can even consider a long-term career here, or just move out at the first opportunity I get.
Don’t change companies at this stage unless your current company cannot relocate you to Canada or Europe.
If the company can't, by all means look for one that can. I joined Microsoft on my last attempt as well
If you pass up on Canada now, can you not go back if another H1B attempt fails?
Stay with your current company and ask for more $. Include a poll.
Thank you for answering. Just added the poll.
