Hello, I'm trying to figure out where to live for when I start fulltime job (obligatory TC:170k, L3 google). I have one of two options: [$1,100 Rent + 1hr 15mins commute during traffic or 30 minutes 6am commute 3pm return] OR [$2,500+ Rent + 20 minute commute] I'm a cheap fuck and also cuz I have some family obligations to pay and I don't want to overburden myself so early. I also like the area with the cheap rent much much more. Anyone who also did the 6am to 3pm commute please tell me your experience?
Are you a morning person? Can you shift it further to be a 9am leave cheap area and 6pm leave office?
Do you plan on showing up to the office every day? If so, short commute is worth it
You’ll hate your life and wish you spent the extra money on rent. Also, if you commute less you can be more refreshed at work, do a better job, and move up the pay scale faster
I would always say high rent and short commute but I do not know your financial obligations. If there is a time limit to your obligation, I would sweat it out to save and then move closer. If not, always stay close to work. Time is money!
I would go with early commute if company allows
Do you do it? How is it?
The option you said about going office from 6am to 3pm
Get a remote job
I'm newgrad, would rather not.
I did a 1 hr 15 min interview for the first 2.5 years of my career after graduating. I didn’t mind it and thought it was worth it since the job was really exciting to me. However, most of that commute was by train in the Bay Area, so I could be social with friends on the commute, watch TV on my phone, read news, etc. It felt like down time. If you’re going to be driving that much, I’d rethink it personally. It’s such a drain.
I change my vote. Originally only read the headline. If you can make the 6am-3pm schedule work, I'd say opt for the cheap place. The area you live is so important. 20 minutes extra a day is definitely worth 50% rent and nicer area.
this was the comment i was looking for. Yeah really want to stay in the further away location, not just cuz of price but also cuz thats where my relatives live + more chill area + the owner is a relative so i can cancel anytime basically. Do you know if google typically allows this schedule? A fellow googler mentioned it to me so i assume its common-ish?
Yeah definitely sounds like the better option! Ask your team, but I'd be surprised if they couldn't make that work for you either immediately or in the near term. The optionality you would have on the far place sounds appealing too. Try it out, work with your team on the 6am-3pm schedule, and see if you like it. If anything goes wrong you can always move closer. Or at least that's what I would do.
20 mins and 1hr 15mins, there has to be a middle ground.
I get you, but sometimes 20 mins is the closest location to the office and 1.15 hours commute is the closest to downtown. Which will be better?
$1100 close to downtown 😱. What downtown is this? I would always pick less commute. Number of hours you work will be the same regardless of where you live. Longer commute means less family time. That said, if my budget is tight I would be ok with 30 mins commute if that brings the rent down.
Freaking expensive rent but no commute
You can’t buy time….
Buy you can but it
Time you can’t but
