Chewy vs HubSpot

Do you want to be a people manager - dealing with staffing plans, hiring/firing, comp reviews, perf reviews, etc? Or would you rather be more of an engineer that has a little management responsibility? I can't speak to the Chewy EM role and what it involves, but the HubSpot TL role is more of the latter - you're responsible for leading a small team typically with 2-4 engineers and owning a small slice of the HubSpot product (along with your product manager, if you're in a group that has them). You'll write performance reviews for your team 2x a year and be involved in the PIP process if you have an underperformer, but that's about it in terms of management responsibilities. Internally, a TL is considered a manager, but I think that's really overstating it. A lot of the 'classical' manager responsibilities - hiring, firing, staffing plans, comp reviews, etc - happen at the Engineering Lead level and above. ELs have a mix of IC engineer (SSWE II and below) and TL direct reports comprising 2-5 teams, and are also responsible for TLing one of their teams (and are thus actively coding a small percentage of their time).
