(Posting on behalf of my husband) I have an offer from a late stage startup - raised Series D - to join as a Chief data scientist in the Bay Area. Base is 350K with 3M in options. Wanted to get some feedback on whether it is a good offer or not. Moving from academia now so slightly clueless on industry comp.
What industry is this?
350k is ok, slightly below average I would say. Option are good (assuming it's yearly options of course, if it's a 4y vesting, don't even bother to the startup, they're not serious)
Vesting is over 4 years. What is the typical compensation in salary and options?

Consider farm attendant handler or paneer former
This looks on par for this role and title at a later stage startup. In big tech you would be looking at a Principal level scientist role, TC in the 500-800k range annualized, mix of cash and RSUs, but fully liquid upon vesting. Considering risk and liquidity adjustment for options - they are worth less than RSUs in public company - value at maybe half face value for series D. So yes, broadly speaking this is in the right range.
