Hi. In light of all of the anti Chinese sentiment, I’d like to shed some actual light about what is going on here not what media tells you. I was born in the Pacific Northwest. Spent nearly all my life in the US. I live in Shanghai and love it. Been here for 3 years. AMA I’m doing this because I’d like to bring genuine discourse. Not here to argue or debate. Just want to lovingly tell the truth. If i don’t know something, i will tell you. I will draw from my personalexperiences mostly and not the news. So i cannot tell you anything about xinjiang, Tiananmen because it doesn’t affect my life and i don’t see it.
How many people actually know about Tiananmen? Like, did the Chinese government’s attempt at suppressing it genuinely work? I hope this doesn’t sound disrespectful, I am honestly just curious.
No worries. So everyone i interact with in China knows about it. I interact with people with college degrees which is only 20% of the population. I don’t really interact with the other 80%. I visited my friends parents who live in a small city in fujian. Their parents are construction workers (like construction foreman though). They knew about it.
There is no anti-Chinese sentiment, there is anti-China which is more about the CCP.
Man I hate Americans. US is a shit country. Wait did I hurt your feelings? Sorry I was only anti-Trump.
I think Americans tend to conflate anti China with anti Chinese. There has been a significant uptick of anti Chinese sentiment on social media and in the us.
Bruce Lee's 1" punch: real or fake?
Not sure. Don’t know. Don’t follow Kung fun
What's the general opinion on Trump?
Most ppl here think he’s a moron. Very different than 4 years ago. They think less of Americans because of Trump.
Also abc, always wanted to move to China to see what it’s like. Originally Shanghai roots. What was the hardest decision in making the move? Also what was the hardest thing to adapt to when you got there?
I had a great team at Microsoft. I loved what i did at Microsoft. It really was my ikigai. That was the hardest thing about moving. I still keep in touch with my Microsoft coworkers (quarterly 1:1s) and manager said i have a spot on the team if want to come back - obviously depends on headcount availability.
Are you still in Amazon? Are there offices hiring in shanghai for SDE? How did you transfer
Yea. At amazon now. Applied from Microsoft. Got headhunted by changing LinkedIn location to SH.
Does SH hire SDE 1 or is it mainly SDE 2. Does your mandarin have to be fluent to work there? Wanted to always try this and at amazon now but only know shanghainese. Also how does the TC compare?

House pricing in Shanghai? Do you rent or own?
I rent.
What is it like for gay people in China now? I was there in 2010 but not since.
Shanghai it’s great. There was a really fun rainbow party at the W hotel that was both inclusive and fun for everyone. It wasn’t uncomfortable at all for all straight folks. I regularly see same sex couples holding hands which i think is good that they feel comfortable. Some of colleagues are openly queer both MM and FF relationships. Can’t speak for rest of China. I think rest of China maybe a little more Conservative and not as progressive.
Good to know, thanks. Sounds different from 2010!

Are covid numbers (around 85k cases) of China real?
I think so. I don’t know. In Shanghai, Beijing, Fujian, and Zhejiang, which are places I’ve been in the last 5 months covid has never really been a problem. I go to the office everyday. I don’t really wear a mask except on Subway which is mandated. My guess is that the number is right otherwise more people would have it and society would be be shut down. Many of my friends in the us got it. I don’t have a single friend here that go it. I think that means at least Shanghai Beijing should be true. Can’t speak for what i haven’t seen
Genuinely curious what is the public opinion of how is it that China doesn’t have it as much?
