So… Currently I am working as an Associate Software Engineer (TC 75K) at a company which is pretty slow to promote. I estimate I’d hit Software Engineer status by Summer/Fall 2021 and Senior Engineer status in 2024/2025. Most Senior Engineers at my company currently make around TC 120K-150K. I’ve been working here for around 6 months. Located in Austin. In December, I got an offer to start as an Engineering Resident at Google with a TC of 131K (106K salary / 10K relocation / 15K completion bonus) starting this July. Now, the Engineering Resident program is a 1 year rotational program with no guaranteed position at the end of the program. If you read around, a lot of people say that the program has a high conversion rate to Full Time and that the program is awesome. I would hypothetically be evaluated for a full time position around June 2021. Located in Seattle. Due to COVID-19, I still have both positions (god bless) but the economic impacts of the virus has me worried about going from a full time associate software engineer position to become a temporary software engineer at G since there is a slight chance that G may not be hiring when I finish the program. So what do you all think I should do? Side Note: I originally said ‘Yes’ to the Google offer since it would be a 40K pay bump with only 6 months of experience and I thought I would likely get into Google after the residency finishes. The only negative would be the demotion from full time to rotational.
Is this really a question? You have a high chance to get into the door of arguably the most prestigious tech company in the world. The senior title at your current company is likely not going to mean much for the Albertsons.
It would be no-brainer for me, but obviously every person's situation is different. Look at the pros of making the switch. In the best case scenario, everything works out, you like the job, you have the pay hike etc. What is not so best situation? In the event you don't get converted, you might have made 16months equivalent worth of salary as compared to your current position. That gives you 4 full months to prepare and get another job. Money may not be the primary factor for you, bit still you will have Google in your resume, that will definitely make you stand out. Btw, I work at Google now.
Another point I want to add is make sure you don't burn the bridges at your current company. It very common for SWEs to go back and work in the same company down the road
I would go to google even if there was no job after. No brainer.
Go get the Google experience. Even if it doesn’t lead to a job it will open doors.
It’s like 95% conversion, if you’re good enough to get in and you don’t slack 24/7 you’re good. Congrats!
Even if the Google offer was 1 year only and there is 0% chance of full time afterwards, that is still absolutely worth it in terms of experience and resume points.
Exactly what I was going to say.
Come to Google 😊
At your stage of career, security is not very valuable. At TC of $75k can be quadrupled by 2024 if you can hang on to Google. The amount lost if you lose your job is miniscule, especially if you can move around. You don't have security or guaranteed promotion prospects at your current. Nobody does. No use holding onto something not valuable.
Had a friend do the google engineering residency. Retention from that program is really high >90% so you’re almost guaranteed to get in
