What happens when most of your team is Indian?
I'm trying to decide between two new grad offers. They're different roles, and I'm unsure which to take. On the one hand, the quant developer role pays more than the quant trader role, but the quant trader role may also have higher salary progression. On the other hand, I've never done quant trading before and don't know what it entails or if I would even be good at it. My past experience is in quant dev, SWE, and quant research. My goal is to make as much money as possible so that in the future, I can use the capital I earn to start my own company. What are your thoughts? Offer 1: Quant hedge fund based in Europe (>400 employees) Role: Quant Developer Location: NYC Base: $150k Bonus: $70k Sign-on: $40k Offer 2: Options market-maker (~100 employees) Role: Quant Trader Location: Chicago Base: $135k Bonus: $10-50k years 1 and 2, then a portion of PnL Sign-on: $5k I also want to be cognizant of the current job market- I'm not making this post to brag or come off as such. I'm extremely grateful to have gone to a T5 university and feel privileged to be in the position that I'm in. I really appreciate any input the community has. #twosigma #deshaw #citadel #hudsonrivertrading #janestreet #jumptrading #akunacapital #optiver #citadelsecurities #interview #finance #google #facebook #amazon #meta #tech
Make it a poll
done, thanks
Name the shops or everyone goes for the TC
CTC named one…
I won't name them for the sake of anonymity. The first firm is a well-known quant hedge fund based in Europe, and the second is a small options market-maker (~100 employees)
Is the 1st one flow traders? The pay is the lowest among all the shops atleast in EU and the TC progression is not that great when compared to others
No, the first one is a hedge fund in based in Europe.
They’re two completely different roles. If you only care about money then go the QT route, but you should probably put some more thought into the roles — what will your day-to-day look like for each role? Which would suit you better right now? What are the WLB differences? Making tons of money is great, but having relevant experience for things you’d like to do in the future is important. And it’s always nice to not hate the work you’re doing. For e.g. you won’t build much of a trader’s intuition in a QD role and if you’re hoping to start your own shop at some point understanding trading logic will go a long ways. If you’re interested in starting a company outside the trading space then this doesn’t matter and the QD experience may be better.
Sure they won’t understand trading intuition as a QD, but working close to QR’s and QT’s, they’ll have to pick up a fair amount of trading logic.
Thanks for the input- I really appreciate it. I applied to QT because I thought the TC would be higher than SWE or QD, but all of the QT offers I've received are below the QD offer I have (offer 1), and by quite a margin. Is QT really going to scale that much more than QD? Another question I have is what is a QT actually doing all day? Staring at their screens all day looking at their models and looking for good trades? Are these skills applicable to outside of trading? (this is a genuine question- for example, the skills I build up in QD can be used to build a software company in the future, but the same cannot be said about QT).
I only looked at TC since I don’t know much about those firms but damn good job landing these as a new grad
Pretty low for a quant ngl
I'd definitely choose #2, unless you want to do more development/coding as a long-term career. Also, derivatives trading is sexier than quant dev, although much more competitive to be successful.
Good guess. Neither of the offers are Flow.
