I'm currently a L4 SDE at Amazon and I don't see myself getting to L5 here because my manager doesn't seem supportive of my promo and I think I have very big gaps like not knowing what to say during meetings. I also haven't been given any big projects to lead either and I feel like I'm not growing anymore. I've been thinking about switching to a different company (non-tech) for the mid-level promotion. Would it be worth the switch in the next year to get a higher title elsewhere with a pay cut? Or should I milk out L4 salary at Amazon for as long as I can? TC: $150k YOE: 2
Outside of tech, titles are pretty inflated and everyone is aware of that, so getting a "better" title doesn't really benefit you at all when it is known to be an inflated title. I'd say TC is more important, if possible look for other teams, or similarly paying jobs outside of Amazon.
You’re avoiding challenge and growth. Keep it up and you’ll find a low ceiling on your career as a mediocre IC or a terrible manager. If you value your career, it’s better to learn and make mistakes in a tough environment than to coast in an easy one.
Hey a piece of advice ... My 6 month intern at Amazon did not get converted, My manager at that point suggested I should move to some non tech role. Fast forward i am SDE3 at a good company. Planning to start my own soon . So the moral of the story is if you are able to survive in Amazon you will go and rock the world outside(in tech). Don't get demotivated because of some promotion shit.
Planning to start your own company??
Pay 100%
Wouldn't you be PIPed eventually if you stay L4 for too long? If that's the case stay and collect severance.
Title means nothing
