Is it worth it to switch from a full-time job to contract with the goal of earning more money ? Current role at cisco (GRADE 8) Base: 140k Bonus: 12% 401k matching Cisco ESPP Microsoft 18 month contract Base: 250k ($100/hr) 15 days accrued PTO No bonus No stock
Your goal is clear. Go with Microsoft
250k is $100/hr if you work 2500 hours in a year, but a “standard” 40 hr/week x 52 weeks is 2080. Is the job really paying 250k? What about benefits? Will you have to self fund them as a contractor? The pay difference might be a lot smaller than it appears at first if you’re switching from full time to contract work.
This^ I’d double check your math there buddy before you tell yourself you’re actually making $250k.
If possible, use this opportunity to contract to hire.
Go with Stability. Contractors can be let go at any time (no severance package)
In Microsoft, contractors are considered as second class. Don’t jump. Former grade 8 here, had an offer from Microsoft. Cracking Microsoft full time is pretty easy these days, easier if you happen to get into one of their hiring events.
This. It is true that contractors are treated as second class citizens in Microsoft. You would anyway have to go through a full loop for conversion. You might as well interview there - it's pretty easy to clear too anyway
$100/hr is about $200k/year. No benefit? I would negotiate for a better rate
why would you want to be contractor? doesn’t matter which company.
Use that offer and get more pay at cisco and stay at cisco
No it’s not
microsoft for sure. solid pay and better name on resume
