Cisco vs. ServiceNow

Aug 19, 2019 11 Comments

I’m an Account Manager at Cisco. I’m looking to transition into more of a SaaS / cloud play and I have a shot at ServiceNow in the Federal Space.

Any thoughts on this move? HW still accounts for ~70% of Cisco’s revenue, which is arguably turning more and more into a commodity sell. I’m more interested in selling software.

Google seems to hire a lot of subpar cisco folks. That's your best bet into software

Guys, like with any generalisation, there is a varying degree of bias in saying Cisco AMs are x or y. As you can't speak for a population so easily. What you could do however is take a reprezentative sample and compare it to another from another company. By comparing it to multiple, you actually get a relevamt result vs a predicted industry standard. This is something I actually did when working in strategy. It turned out(then) that Cisco is 1,8 Standard Deviation ahead of the industry mean in which in resides. Measurement was done on goal attainment yoy for a period of 3 years, starting with 2015, with a sample of ~250 AMs from all GEOs. So yes, you could say, with fair confidence intervals(about 90% +/-), that Cisco has a world-class sales org. It is the very reason Google and others are interested in it. That does not mean there are no "bad" AMs ofc. It just means we have less than most. Goin back to the original Q, though, although not in strategy anymore, I am aware of how our targets can seem really high for this FY. It's probably because a LOT of bonus was payed FY19. If you'd want to move now, at least from that perspective, it's a good time. However, reasons of jumping ship would have to be more diversified I guess, since I expect this behavior to exist in most Sales Orgs.

And personal advice: if you're eng, stop blaming sales and the other way around. It's almost never that black and white. It's important to be precise with the language you use, so you don't fall into easy biases to confirm your assumptions(which even for a VC - which I consider professional guessers - are 72% wrong most of the time).
