Civilized talk about why you voted for Obama.. twice

If you did, why'd you vote for Obama, and were you fulfilled? What do you agree and disagree with? Looking for serious answers. Some rules for the thread: - Please try to be detailed in your replies. "republicans are bad" isn't helpful, and I'd like to better understand. - Be the better person and help us have a civilized discussion. - Please refrain from terms that you know will set people off, either side of the fence. If it sounds like something the Barack or the Hillary would say, rephrase it. - Don't feed the trolls. They'll have babies. P s this is to mirror similar post democrats posted :)

Now sure if I am suppose to like it or hate, but I did like because it’s typical leftist rhetoric :)

First time, I voted for Obama because I thought I was voting for a civil libertarian and constitutional scholar who would close down Guantanamo and end illegal NSA surveillance of American citizens. None of that happened. Second time, I voted for him because the alternative was worse.

Netflix misterio OP Jul 28, 2019

Why was it worse, mitt Romney was successful businessman and the nicest guy we had in politics for 30 years ? Honestly

Yelp sJJv80 Jul 28, 2019

Neither one of those things matters.

SAP Man Jul 28, 2019

What about those of us who didn't vote for Obama either time?

Netflix misterio OP Jul 28, 2019

Must be racist conservative hater

^This is why OP is struggling to get serious responses.

I wasn’t eligible to vote for Obama, but I sympathized. I liked the steps he took to take the US out of the economic crisis, his attempts to bring better healthcare options across the US (unfortunately initial plan got severely cut by republicans). Iran deal was fine too, as well as taking climate change seriously (not to the extent I wanted it to, but better than what we have today). His attempts to close Guantanamo and take the US out if Afghanistan were decent, but obviously didn’t fully succeed (I’m not sure we’d want it at its cost). I was not happy with his Israel/Palestine approach, and US involvement in Libya may have made things worse. I also think there should have been more done to improve the security of elections and meddling from other countries.

Are you concerned about the US budget?

Apple Okidoki Jul 29, 2019

I am! I understand it takes a lot of effort to take the country out of the crisis and I was hoping that maybe conservatives at least would be “fiscally responsible”. Unfortunately, it is not the case. While I applaud some of the tax cuts, many of them were ridiculous and we should have really re-assessed the military spending. Especially since Trump said he was focusing on internal issues and not eager to fix anyone else’s problems.

Who the hell cares of Obama.. he is yesterday’s news!

Target tmDe33 Jul 28, 2019

I didn't vote for years and years. I thought it was a waste of time. I don't think that way any more. I voted for the first time in 2018, and will vote again every year.

Because he was more pro-gay than his opponent. I was disappointed that Democrats didn’t immediately repeal DADT and DOMA, but we got there eventually. Whereas Republicans are still trying to take my marriage rights away and kick LGBTQ people out of the military.

Not true, just trying to avoid people using the military to pay for “T” surgery

In most elections it's about who is the lesser evil, meaning you often end up voting for someone you think is flawed, but far less flawed than the alternative. In the most recent election Trump v Clinton was really a contest between two utterly horrible people and I think most voters on either side held their noses when voting. Probably about 20% on each side that were crazy enough to actually like their candidate and the rest just picking what they believed to be the lesser evil. That said, looking back, Obama and McCain both had positive messages overall. Better days. I think they actually believed in building the country (succeeding being something else), whereas Trump and Clinton were both just very divisive and campaigned largely on who was the scarier.
