Google is now being discussed by some as one of the most coasting-inducing companies, because of sluggish internal processes, a ton of bureaucracy, non-responsive rating system with pre-assigned percentages, etc. All of this demotivates people, they say. +1. Would say it’s more common now than before but not backfilling attrition is reversing that trend. Would say 40-50 hours a week isn’t rare with the right manager, but definitely not coasting - either you’re worked hard or you are organized enough (a different kind of work itself) to maintain decent boundaries.
At meta is very possible to work 30-40 hours and get good ratings. You need to hunt for the right team and projects. More common among my coworkers is to work 40-60 hours. There are coasters but they get targeted very obviously unless they are super valuable to the team for context.

40-60 hours a week is the usual for me but I do mentally check out from disassociation sometimes so maybe that counts as coasting right?
