I talked to a recruiter and they gave me 2 options: 1. Code pair programming session (I think it's only one for the Engineering Manager role) 2. Take home assignment (create an app, and on later interviews implement some more features) The position is for mobile team, in which I have 7 years as mobile developer. Problem is, I don't actually code for like 4 years... I think I could do just fine if questions are LC style, but I would still need to study. But I decided to go with option 2 and I don't even remember how to HELLO WORLD. I feel like a fraud. I am not a developer anymore. I think I will kill myself. #dramatic #square #interview
If it helps EMs are not expected to do as well as ICs in the coding portion (at least on the pair programming, not sure about the take home). For EMs, things like breaking down the problem and analyzing it, communication, etc become more important than code fluency.
Awesome that helps a lot! Thanks for the tip 🧡
Just to update, I did the interview this week. It was actually more fun than I anticipated. The interviewer didn't help me much, but my time management was poor and I was not able to finish in time, but it was very close! Not sure how the results will be but I am happy with this first experience. @spartan300 How long does it take to get an answer back from recruiters?
I like to hear what happened after the interview, did you get an offer? I see the majority of people don't come back to tell the full story, for people like me, want to know what happened, so I can prepare or at least be happy to know. I know this is an old post, but I have an EM interview tomorrow with HM and I'm searching blind desperately to know these :) I'm also same as you, 7+ yoe but stopped coding 3 yrs back and moved to full time people mgt, and i suck at DS and Algos as i'm not from CS background

I don’t think there’s a need to be that dramatic about it. There’s room for non coding EMs as long as you understand tech and are good at managing people. But if squares interview includes that much coding for an EM then maybe that’s not the role for you? Or if you really want to work there brush up on your skills like it’s cram time. I’m sure it’ll come back if you start doing some practice problems. Either way good luck! I’m sure you’ll find a great role that fits your skill set
just a bystander but wanted to say i appreciate the positivity! blind needs more of people lifting each other up ❤️
Such positive vibes are much needed here on blind
