I have an offer from Coinbase. I am considering joining them because: 1) Its a pretty decent pay bump compared to my current TC. 2) Crypto is a niche. Could be interesting work. 3) Don’t have better offers. Want to get some insight into the company so that I don’t regret the decision. I don’t think I have the will to LC grind again anytime soon. So this is where I will be for a while. Hows the work culture? How are the projects? Engineering quality? Any details about attrition? Voluntary or otherwise? Is there “PIP”? Can I grow there as a Senior engineer? I have heard that most engineers there are seniors, so I am worried there wouldn’t be enough scope for “project lead” kind of a work. People working at Coinbase, please comment. This is meant to be a very open question. I want to know more about your company. Offer: 373k Current: 270k #coinbase #crypto #engineering
Based off your TC I’m guessing you’re a tenured SDE II at amazon. Scope is similar as a senior at Coinbase (or any company with staff levels). Growth opportunities will depend on team. Some teams have multiple staff engineers that might stand in your way. Some might have none. Also depends on the scope of your projects/roadmap Source: made the same move
Oh nice. Actually, I am SDE 3 at Amazon, which makes my TC a slap in the face and made me wanna quit. Now coming to Coinbase - have you already started working there? What level? Also how long?
Oh damn haha. Joined as a senior for about a quarter now. I guess you might have a slightly smaller scope to start, but you should have the skills to get to Staff pretty quickly.
Also interested in this, I got an IC4 offer and looking to switch as well, have you decided OP?
Haven’t decided yet.
I am in the team matching phase right now, so I guess I will try to get info from them directly.
There's a ton of future projects being planned, so I wouldn't worry too much about lack of scope. Work culture varies on the team. What team is the offer from?
In team matching phase rn. Are you at Coinbase?
Yes, started recently as Staff SE
Work culture is fast paced. Projects are purely contingent on your team. Some teams have rigorous standards for code quality, others not at all. I’ve heard talk of PIP, however from experience its more likely to get fired without any processes and little awareness. Be prepared to ramp up rigorously if you’re working on a crypto related team. If you’re effective and can politic well, then you’ll have no problems growing as an engineer.
Wow, that’s a bit scary. Have you heard of people being fired for any reason? Also which orgs do you think are best in terms of culture and quality?
I’ll echo most of this, though I haven’t heard of sudden firings where there was no wrongdoing on the employee’s part. I’ve been really happy here (working on a more crypto-focused team) and I do think it makes a big difference what team you’re on.
Playing Devils to consider critical side too. 1. CB pip every 3 months (vs 12 mo in Amazon). So if you sure to constantly stay on track, join CB. 2. Tech stack, management, you won’t have enough supporting tools or people to plan your career. You must be okay with constant changes and must have super high adaptability. Expect smart sizing, reorg, redesign, complete ambiguity, launching without quality, be “Yes man” because you don’t have data to say No. 3. You are considering paper money, look at the market too. Amazon equity is diversified while CB depends fully on crypto - highly volatile. 1 year CB stock increased by 4.48% (vs 13.4% AMZN). CB 52w low and high are (208-429) while AMZN (2.9k-3.7k). Look at your equity and see if you are getting 1.7+ dollar in CB equity for every Amazon 1$ equity to match salary in worst cases ?
CB equity works differently than Amazon. They give a target amount in dollars and allot the equivalent amount of equity. So the equity component of the salary is relatively decoupled from the stock price. I think this is better, because I can sell all the equity at vesting and invest the money in my own portfolio. People get pipped left and right at Amazon. Don’t know how 12-month pip makes it better. By this logic, Amazon must be better than Netflix too.
Hmm. So when they say in the offer that they are giving $10,000 in equity in a year for vesting in 4 quarters. At the time of joining, the stock is $50 and then Q2 onwards it stays at $25. At the year end, do i get 250 stocks (10k/40) or get 350 stocks (50+100+100+100) ? I thought it’s the first one based on conversations with CB recruiter. The vesting converted to the stock in the beginning, But as new company and recruiter itself is <3 months, that explanation can be wrong.. Also personally believe #1 option because the stock allocation for public listed company requires a lot clerical process. If CB calculating and allocating at every quarter, I really doubt it’s ability to scale this process..
A post asking abou coinbase where almost all responses are from Amazonians…sure coinbase can be the Amazon in crypto:)
Coinbase is like packed with Amazon people
