Coinbase : team matching

I just received the good news that they want to extend an offer, but first I have to find the right team. They sent me a list of 10 teams, but I've no clue how to pick. I want good WLB, and maximizing in the unlimited PTO. I'm also not really interested much in front-end. Most of my experience is with Java/Spring backend APIs. Any internal insight to be had from Blind? :) Teams: 1) International Expansion Engineering 2) Data Platform 3) Retail 4) Cloud 5) Crypto 6) Ecosystem 7) Growth 8) Infrastructure 9) Institutional 10) Platform Also, I'm told they have 4 recharge weeks, and on top of that there are unlimited PTO. But I'm slightly skeptical: is that just a way for them to prevent us from choosing when to take our vacation? What if I want to take 3 weeks to go in Greece, for example? Non-negotiable offer: 227k CAD Current TC: 110k

No Java. Learn Go. WLB is hard to get.

SAP slack007 OP Apr 18, 2022

But Go looks like just a fad. :( Java is definitely here to stay.

Coinbase builds services in Go.

Cloud, Retail, Growth, Crypto might be good. I’d say you’re right to put infra near the bottom. Part of the poor wlb on other teams is because infra is such a shit show - though they are aware of it and are trying to fix this. They probably have a lot of work to do. Don’t have much insight into the others Regarding unlimited PTO, many people I’ve seen take a week off here and there. I don’t see it as a way to force people to limit their options, but more so a way to force people into actually taking vacation. When the entire company shuts down you have more peace of mind that you’re not missing anything important. The more senior you are the more valuable this becomes. If you want to take 3 continuous weeks of vacation It will depend on your management chain, but like at any company I’d just start the conversation early with your manager and make sure you give them sufficient heads up. It can be challenging for managers at any company to plan around that. My suggestion would be, if possible, sandwich this with a recharge week. So 1 week PTO - recharge - 1 week PTO. Recharge weeks are at the end of quarter so this way you’re only missing one week per quarter (from a planning perspective).

Aren't Cloud orgs generally known for worse WLB at companies?

Coinbase bUnV41 Apr 19, 2022

Not necessarily. In the case of Google cloud the reputation seems to be worse than the rest of google (lots of ex amazon managers). But at amazon and Microsoft they seem to be in line with the rest of the company. Oncall would obviously be a little more scrutinized in each since so much of the internet depends on you. I’d imagine work at Coinbase cloud is a little different than regular cloud since it’s web3, and they came through an acquisition which means they operate a little differently than the rest of the company.

Hey op . Congrats. How was the Coinbase interview . Is it leetcode based

SAP slack007 OP Apr 20, 2022

For SDE2: only 2 rounds of 1 hour each. Simple programming stuff, nothing fancy.

How did you get the general non team specific interview? It seems like on the careers page its all team based

Google rctv77 Apr 19, 2022

Out of curiosity, how long after your onsite interview day did you hear back about them extending an offer?

SAP slack007 OP Apr 20, 2022

A week

Congrats! Did you get all the follow-up questions in your on-sites?

SAP slack007 OP Apr 21, 2022

Using Java, I cleared 2 parts for both problems.

1) yes, unlimited PTO is a scam meant to trick you into a race to the bottom. how does it look to management when you take more holidays than the average? 2) don't you remember the scandal Coinbase went through in 2020? it wasn't exactly their first, BTW. why would you want to contribute to such a rotten company? Best of luck in your new role, whichever you end up choosing
