Background: CS major, 0 YOE, currently working remotely in Canada. I joined Coinbase around the start of the year as a IC3 (New grad). Since the last layoff in Coinbase, the unsettling feeling that there is a layoff2.0 on its way has been haunting me. So I started looking for an alternative, I recently received a NG offer from Bloomberg, but I am still swinging back and forth between the two options, cuz they offer me two very different experience and career path ahead. Below are just some points that are influencing my decision. Bloomberg: $$: 150K base + ~20K bonus and 10k relocation (USD) Same for both NYC, Princeton. - Sponsors visa and green card application later on. - Projects in NYC seem more interesting compare to the ones in Princeton - NYC living cost and environment scares me (or maybe most canadians). Princeton COL would be a lot lower? - Hybrid, in office 2-3 times a week. - WLB is way better? socializing is more important? - Learn more about finance, perhaps helpful getting into hedge funds later on? Coinbase: $$: ~130K + 5% bonus (CAD) and 37.5K RSU (USD). - More recognized as a tech company than Bloomberg on resume? - I am in a rather essential team (team pretty much unaffected during last layoff), but as an IC3, I could still be the first one on the next layoff list? - Remote work, WLB is meh. - Learn more transferable tech knowledge. The order of things that I find important right now: Career development > Savings > WLB Savings: Bloomberg Princeton > CB > Bloomberg NYC Getting green card can help a lot with getting a job in US later on? Do people value Princeton office less than NYC office for Bloomberg? Hope folks on Blind could give some honest opinions on what you think about these two company and what would you do during this time. Thanks in advance. #coinbase #bloomberg
Lol why is this a question? Bloomberg sells actual stuff, Coinbase is a middleman for extremely volatile intangible assets
From the software engineer career perspective, wouldnt companies value Coinbase more than Bloomberg, cause we do way more tech stuff?
Bloomberg's flagship product is the Bloomberg Terminal, if that isn't tech I don't know what is
Run. Layoff 2.0 looks very probable after today at robinhood. You're young, move to NYC and enjoy life a little.
Coinbase has lost all it's reputation when. It rescinded new grad offer
True.
Bloomberg NYC
Move to Bloomberg NYC and make sure you live in NYC (not NJ)! You will live and grow a lot, I wish someone had told me that when I was 0 YOE. Just don’t get sucked into the WLB hole at this point. Bloomberg is amazing in that you can coast if you want to, but can also grow a lot if you choose to. And it has top of the line benefits, including immigration help. Never ever having to worry about layoffs is golden too!
Have you negotiated at either company yet?
CB has a flat rate pay so they aren't negotiable. I am talking to Bloomberg, but doubt anything will be given.
Kind of on a similar boat. How long has negotiation been for you with bbg? It’s been about a week wait since my request
You'd be an idiot to stay at Coinbase over Bloomberg in this environment. You can learn and grow and all that shit when the recession's gone. Focus on having a job for the next year or so for now
Bloomberg offer looks better at this point, I think because you rsu lost value, but the Coinbase Eng reputation is better simply because they pay top money so you will be fine finding another job. Upside is more when your rsu reset next year. From what I can tell, Coinbase is going to win big as regulation looks much friendly now!
The only concerns I have with Bloomberg is honestly its engineering rep and NYC HCOL. Seeing most of the poll on Blind (look up "bloomberg tier") saying Bbg is far from being a tier 1 tech company. To me CB also has quite a lot of tech debt, but at least it sounds like the engineering practice here is overall more modern. While bbg depends on team.
I am with coin, it has lots of debt but everywhere else is the same as technology evolves. Twilio was on the same boat as k8s, multi account, language choice, db store choices are shifting. I cannot imagine bloomberge is not. You join a startup if you want to build tech debt yourself.
You get a better comp at Bloomberg than Coinbase? I'm amazed. Coinbase will do another round of layoffs. You guys simply have way too many employees for what you do. You have a solid offer and you should take it.
Canadians are cheap labours living in the same timezone 😂
