Hi folks, my wife and I are planning to buy a home in Berryessa neighborhood of San Jose. I will need to commute to my office in Sunnyvale everyday. Can someone help me understand if this is not practical, or is it just a slight inconvenience? Tc: $550k#housing #mortgage
It is ok but why commute everyday?
I work with unreleased hardware and so I need to be in the office everyday to get work done. Only once or twice a month do I get the liberty to work 3 days a week.
You should check the crime rate and other things about that area
Any reliable resources to check that? I tried to google crime rate in that area and from various random sources online it seems to be relatively safe.
San jose to Sunnyvale is easy peasy. The trick is to not use Google maps and rush through residential neighborhoods.
Commute from Berryessa is way better than commuting from south San jose or Fremont. Lot of folks from Nvidia are buying in and around Berryessa
Just checked Google map today. At 8:50 am, it took 27min to Sunnyvale meta office from a recently pending house in Berryessa. (2869 Donizetti Court) It’s only 12 miles but lack of free way connection (need to drive to 237 first) It took 29mins from south San Jose to the same office through 85. It’s basically the same commute time but it’s much more expensive in Berryessa.
Depends what u consider as south san jose. Have u looked at the commute from evergreen area?
I live in berryessa. Commute takes 25 minutes best case and sometimes up to 40 mins.
Linkedin talk it out publicly so people can know about the area… there isn’t anything to be taken to DM
Posting here from DM for visibility. I took it to DM just in case op has more questions I wouldn’t call this area unsafe but in some pockets there are homeless camping. Mostly around bart and great mall. It really depends on the area. When you are looking at the house, take a stroll around in late evening and see how you feel. I don’t find my neighborhood and surrounding areas unsafe.
Density in Berryessa is pretty high though
Try 94085.
That's the worst zip code in Sunnyvale
Yes, I know 94085 is bad at this moment. I’m a realtor, I have successfully predicted the significant increase of 95124 last year. I think the next big potential area is 94085. Here is my reasoning. - This area has super good commute like to big tech companies, much better than 95051. Look at the house prices in 95051, crazy. - The new townhouse in this area has much higher price than single family of similar size, which is not usual. The biggest concern in this area is neighborhood. - Many people who are priced out in the popular area would go to less popular area, 94085 will be one of the popular choices, due to its great location. Actually, it has been popular this year. - As time goes on, the population of this area would slowly be replaced with high pay tech workers, and the neighborhood would be better and better. The price would increase significantly after a certain point. Last October , I bought a single family in 94085 for my client, and the price has increased >20% so far.
I live in Berryessa and love it. Being close to Bart is a great addition too
Thank you for the responses everyone. We just got into contract for a house in the Berryessa neighborhood.

Buying in Sunnyvale is obviously the lowest commute. The further you go the higher the pain. Depends on your pain tolerance. Try to commute there from office a few times after work and see if it is something you are ok with. Only you can determine your pain tolerance. For some even tri valley is manageable but for others they can’t bear more than 10 min commute
