Which companies don’t require a portfolio for their product or UX designers? #design #interviews #Ux
Wouldn’t really wanna work for a company that doesn’t vet their design hires design skills tbh
+1. Trying to be open minded but sceptical of a company that would bypass reviewing the work of potential new design hires.
I know one company. It's called In your dreams
Automattic. But then again, I don’t really recommend it as a place to work.
Hey do u mind elaborating on this? I’m still deciding if I want to go through the interview loops with them
Its highly dependent on which team you are applying for. Some orgs are good (woo commerce), others not so much. If you want to flex your PM skills, it’s an ok place for that. There’s no cross functional teams.. just design and eng. If you want more deets, feel free to DM
In 10 years of interviewing at various levels, I’ve never not had a portfolio or case study review.
EY
I've only had this happen at companies where I came in with a very strong referral (ex coworker who was very familiar with my work and was well-positioned and trusted in the new org) and the team didn't have a defined hiring process yet. It's so rare that I wouldn't count on it. A lot of young/small companies where I was referred still had me do a portfolio interview. Suck it up, make your portfolio, and start interviewing. 99% of the time the companies who don't ask for a portfolio are not places you'd want to work. If you have no good projects, think again. Portfolios are 50% the quality of the design work and 50% about narrative. If you really, really don't have any good projects, then put together a mediocre portfolio (maybe using side projects), jump to a place where you'll have the chance to do better work, and then leverage that to jump to an even better place.
I have a portfolio I was just curious to see if any companies didn’t do portfolio reviews and focused more on resume or interviews
Resumes are much less informative than a portfolio. Portfolio gets you through the first few stages, and the last few interviews are usually design exercises and behavioral interviews.
Every company has some kind of portfolio review. But I am curious if there are some that place less emphasis on the online portfolio and more on the presentation?
Once you’re experienced and have some major companies on your resume, you generally don’t need an online portfolio. You still need a deck though that can be sent through email
To be fair, OP may be asking so they can avoid these companies in future. I would never work for one that didn’t ask for technical skills
It was mostly just a curiosity question but I agree that I wouldn’t want to join a company that didn’t want to evaluate our actual skills
You’ll most likely need at least some form of case study or work samples in some form like a deck.
Yeah, experienced people (or people who come in with referrals) often won't need a portfolio website. Just a deck that you can share in the first interview.
