Companies with 1mm+ TC for remote L7?

Currently at VMware feeling demotivated by the Broadcom acquisition. I've got an offer, but I'm not sure I want to stick around. I'm L7, perhaps with an L8 scope: sole technical responsibility for a product ($250mm+ annual revenue) and a team of 120+ engineers (US, Europe, India). I'm in the US, but I don't live an a major tech hub. I don't want to relocate, but have a lot of experience working remotely. Current schedule includes 7am and 10pm meetings for cross-geo collaboration and quarterly travel. Aside from Alphabet and Meta, where should I be looking for opportunities? 2023 TC: $1mm 2024 TC: $1.25mm

Airbnb. Pays super well, live and work anywhere

VMware gmeed Nov 14, 2023

Wow.. didn’t know Sr Staff gets so much that too remote.

VMware ja4s2K OP Nov 14, 2023

I'm in US Zone 1, and the difference between Zone 1 and Zone 0 shrinks at higher levels. PD20Z1 is basically the same as PD20Z0.

@OP how many YoE?

VMware ja4s2K OP Nov 14, 2023

The info I've shared so far (level, remote, scope, team size, and team locations) is almost enough to identify me; there's only a handful of us. YOE would dox me.

Those TC numbers look hella higher than levels.fyi which says 600k. how did you get so much as L7 at VMware?

VMware ja4s2K OP Nov 14, 2023

I think levels.fyi data is just stale. VMware skipped raises during the pandemic, but did a company-wide level-to-paygrade adjustment last year to catch up with the market. For most IC roles, it was a bump equivalent to a promotion. (For me, that translated to a 9% bump to salary, adjusting target bonus from 25% to 30%, and a nice RSU refresher.)

Thanks for sharing so much details!

Just reminding myself of the high TC and pulling up the paystubs would be enough to remotivate me!

VMware ja4s2K OP Nov 14, 2023

Building things is what motivates me. The acquisition is really distracting from that. Seeing good engineers get laid off for bad reasons is draining.

Broadcom Ltd. oqdO46 Nov 15, 2023

I suggest you look outside. Broadcom always trys to flatten the hierarchy and make the team leaner. During the past 3-4 years, two levels of middle management in my team have been removed already.

VMware ja4s2K OP Nov 15, 2023

Did the removal focus on management roles, or also include technical leadership? I've built a good bench of L5/L6 engineers and worry I might appear unnecessary. The value I add is hard to quantify.

Broadcom Ltd. mtverse Nov 15, 2023

Tech lead should be safe.

Broadcom Ltd. grang Nov 15, 2023

I get it… did this 4 years ago and it sucks… however it would be unwise to jump ship at your level. 4 yrs from now you’ll be making at least double that TC.

VMware ja4s2K OP Nov 16, 2023

Double, seriously? That's a quick path to retirement.

Broadcom Ltd. Krnl_Panic Nov 16, 2023

If you survive the layoffs, Broadcom pays extremely well at L5+. We had people who were remote before Symantec was acquired whom remained remote, so that’s a possibility. I would just wait and see if I were you.

VMware ja4s2K OP Nov 16, 2023

That's good to hear.

Broadcom Ltd. fgdfbbb Nov 16, 2023

Thats correct

Broadcom Ltd. gshvhjf Nov 19, 2023

The only bad thing is your learning curve or innovation stops as soon as you enter Brcm but your $$$ will increase assuming stock does good from this point on after acquisition.

Broadcom Ltd. ce711 Nov 19, 2023

If your org is generating 250mm/yr w/ 120 head count you are probably in the safe zone imho. If broadcom loves you (read keeps you post acquisition), they will pay you well enough that you’ll love them back.
