I am being converted from full time to 20 hrs per week. They are offering hourly rate in line with my base salary. I think I will have to negotiate on this. If they remove my position completely after a few weeks, would they have to offer any severance? Is this a trick to convert to part time and eventually layoff? Also I have unused vacation. Do they pay for remaining vacation when converting to part time? They said it is temporary and will re-assess in a few weeks/months but nothing is guaranteed given the economy. This is a startup in the bay area.
Which company?
Edited the post with more detail
Name of the company please
Run friend run, given state of economy everyone is pulling out weird stunts.
Just don't settle on base pay. Factor in insurance and other benifits that you were getting
Tell them to double your hourly rate lol
They'll cut his hourly rate in half.
They probably going cut it entirely sooner than later
You aren't entitled to severance. Just because Big Tech is doing it doesn't mean you will get it. Can't say for sure what's going on, but I am guessing that they want to keep you on board so they can figure out what to do next. You probably can't negotiate this - they would probably terminate you. At this point, forget your accumulated vacation. That's probably gone unless the company rebounds.
Bay area employment attorney here. They don't have to pay out your vacation unless you separate. However, your are still entitled to it. It will not (or should not) disappear. Feel free to DM me you have further questions.

I dont know the legality, but did they tell you that they will go back to full time at some point, or is this a permanent change? Either way, I would be updating my resume yesterday and looking for something else. A company that does that to afull time employee isn't a company I would want to work for. Consult a lawyer on this one.
