Just read several posts talking about how good it is to work for Google. I'd also like to share my experience. When working at JPMC (my former employer), my manager knows nothing about the tech I am working on and is only good at talking during meetings(however, I can see that everyone did not like to listen to him talking including the the stakeholders team). Beside the stupid manager, the company also sucks: only 2% salary increase in the year end and giving everyone (new grad hired that year) the same amount of annual bonus in the org no matter how hard you worked or whether you started in January or October. The team also sucks: giving us a 4G memory virtual machine to train machine learning models... how ridiculous: even my personal laptop has 16G memory and you want me to train a ML model with 4G memory virtual machine. Within one year, all my team members including me left the team. I wrote a very long review on Glassdoor and Indeed asking every tech person especially those with tech PhD's do not join this stupid company. However, Glassdoor deleted my review post (Shame on Glassdoor!). JPMC makes money, just because it is an industry that every idiot can make money: tech is not important. There are also tons of employees at JPMC who have worked there for tens of years still with an associate title earning in the ~100k; however, they are proud that JPMC is a great company. It really sucks to work at JPMC: Stupid managers and lifeless colleagues. After started working in Google, I quickly fell in love with Google: every manager and colleague is very smart and friendly with tech degrees from prestigious master or PhD programs; every project and technique is very well documented; there are trainings and learning materials for you to grow; salary is also much better than JPMC. I always love to read the documentations at Google: they are very clear and you know they are the best practice in this industry. The tech resources are also great: we get high performing MacBook pro and have easy access to Google cloud; a lot of internal tools that make your work more efficient. Working at Google is like going through college life again except you don't have to pay tuition and you earn Google salary. With regard to looking for new opportunities, when I was at JPMC, I want to tell every recruiter that I want to leave because everything at JPMC sucks; as for now, when the recruiter asks me why I want to leave google, I always say: I love everything here at Google except the slow promotion and low salary (although Google salary is high compared to most of the companies; it is low compared to a lot newer companies like Robinhood, Snap, FB, or even twitter). I have to say: you will regret if you have never worked for Google; it's an amazing experience! Highly recommend to work for Google for a few years then you can work to optimize career growth or TC. TC:330k. #tech
Tech jobs at banks are in the cost center. The MBAs at JPMC just see you as an expense. They are afraid of allowing IT to have too much power because we would threaten their careers.
There's also something a bit more than this - IBD, Prime Brokerage, even Risk etc. is all built on the relationships and stuff that doesn't get written down. The rest of the business is the 'boring" bit; I genuinely don't think that the "exciting" bits can be threatened by tech in the short/medium term.
I mean. You went from a bank to a real tech company. Of course it’s going to be better.
I didn't expect jpmc is such a shit hole. In addition to jpmc, it seems Morgan Stanley and gs are both shitholes for tech people.
Those are all highly regarded, prestigious banks for other functions eg ibanking. Not really surprised that it’s not great for tech / SWE
Question for everyone : Do people "work" in heaven?
According to Marxism, working is a necessary part of life when people are in heaven.
Man. Even in heaven, huh.
WARNING: don’t fall in love with companies. Work is just part of life and not life itself.
How long have you been at google and what’s your YoE?
Totally agree with OP. JPMC treats designers as pencils too as if we can’t do anything strategic. They’d rather hire outside consultants (all blond white PowerPoint warriors from Big 4) than trust internal designers to do system design. Of course the stuff consultants produced are surface level and non-usable.

I just found out about how Glassdoor deletes reviews for companies. Fucking ridiculous.
F**k Glassdoor! I guess Glassdoor will charge companies for deleting bad reviews.
