Hello, Expecting offers at L5 level from both. Wanted to check on what the upside is at either of these companies and whether it's worth the move. I haven't accounted for potential upside of Spotify stock in my current TC. At peak value, my TC was around 330k. I am mostly looking for ability to take ownership of things and grow to L6 quickly and beyond. That means growing into taking projects at potentially cross-team scope and I am hoping to get openness and exposure to opportunities to grow into that role. Here's what I my understanding is. Would be great to hear from people here and correct any assumptions. Oscar: Pros: Smaller company and potentially more chances of career growth Cons: Healthcare. What are the odds of the growth of the stock? Considering the industry moves slow. Compass: Pros: Have been seeing a lot of posts on Blind that they can match FAANG salaries and have good refresher multipliers. Cons: Real estate sales have a direct impact on the company. Much larger organization. Might be harder to navigate and grow (My perspective) Current TC: ~ 270K YOE: 7 #Careers #SWE #tech #nyc
What’s the reason for leaving Spotify ? How long you have been there ?
Was there 2.5 years. Loved everything about the team. Even grew into a situation where I could have assumed a cross functional and team technical lead. But skip level doesn't want me promoted. Is not interested in mentoring and providing growth both leadership and technical. Infact there's a position for a higher level open for almost a year. But doesn't want to promote. Infact things happened the other way. All the cross functional initiatives I took, were all cut off from me and I was siloed into a team doing stuff. Last dev talk I had, I was pretty blatant asking for my growth and next steps to provide opportunities for me. But they were mute on my request and said that dev talks are supposed to be my initiatives. That was the biggest BS I heard so far. I tried talking to other EMs within Spotify. All that I spoke to are off very similar mentality. So just want to get out.
L5 SWE? You're looking at a 400-450k+ off. If you get leveled at Staff (IC5), itll be even higher Refreshers are well structured, and benefits are excellent. But when it comes to scope its entirely dependent on the team you join... some orgs have limited growth potential
Ah yes. Regarding the level, I did ask for Staff, since the scope of work that I did was so at my current role. But the recruiter came back that I will be leveled as a senior swe-2. Can I DM you if that's okay?
Dm is fine. SR. II maps to IC5 at G/FB
Oscar stock is pretty shit right now but the coworkers are all cool and chill :)
Obviously with any larger organization it’s a bit of a crapshoot in terms of what team you join, and Compass is no exception. I think we have a lot of opportunities and are positioned pretty well in the upcoming year. Best of luck, I’m rooting for you!
biased but i’d say oscar. and thats with me planning on interviewing elsewhere this year (you get a much better deal joining at the bottom than some existing employees).
I worked for Compass and honestly I can’t recommend it. They pay pretty competitively but otherwise it’s not great imo... culture died a long time ago when ex amazombies took over leadership positions + all the good eng leave to FANG+ companies after a year. Eng that comes to Compass from FANG+ tend to be disappointed and boomerang back as well. Place is kind of a revolving door unfortunately. That said, I did work with some smart folks there and they’ve increased comp a lot since IPO, so not all bad by any means
Any update op?
What about oscar?
Have you seen Oscar stock? Every time I think it hit rock bottom, it keeps going lower…
Well, if the stock has upside, then this might be a good time to jump in. That's the flip side :)
yeah.. that’s what I mean. I keep thinking it’s hit rock bottom and it’s only upside from now, but it keeps going lower 😌
