Compass vs. StreetEasy / Zillow

Does anyone have strong views about the potential for either of these two companies to become the “Amazon of Real Estate”? StreetEasy seems to be executing in a methodical way and engineers who work there seem to have high confidence in the company. Compass has a dream team in terms of engineering and capital raising, but has had some missteps on technical and management challenges. If you were going to work at one, and invest in one, which would you pick?

Do you think the current state of technology is like that because the engineers are doing bad work? Or because of bad culture / neglect? Do you feel this is at all shifting with the new engineering management (I heard the new CTO was head of AI at MSFT)

In my opinion it has gotten to this state because the company moved fast to build v1 products that were then abandoned or given minimal attention so they break over time (maybe because the products received little usage after launch). This is mostly driven by product direction not due to incompetent engineers. The code surface has always been larger than what the headcount could reasonably maintain with good quality. This remains true today. The CTO and executive leadership have finally acknowledged this as a problem this year and have adopted the motto of quality first. So it remains to be seen whether this will shift. So far the frequency of bugs feels like it has not decreased.

Word in the industry is that the listing system for the NYC market has serious deficiencies. Is the issue functionality or missing data or what? Also hear that analytics tool is not accurate. Any further insight you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I know nothing about Compass but used to love StreetEasy before the Zillow takeover. SE was for NYC people; Zillow felt like it was just for SFH owners in car-dependent suburbs. This was in 2012, but Zillow didn't even have transit info!

@Hollowed - not your fault, of course. But I really liked SE back in the day and was unhappy about the takeover.
