Compassionate/kind companies to work for?
I feel like I don't need to make a lot of money anymore. I want to work for companies who attract kind people. I am a data scientist with marketable skills. What companies in Bay area have created a culture where humans are valued? Don't mind lower TC, would love to work with compassionate people.
How is it at Walmart labs? Rough?

Amazon? Seriously? This is among the worst tech company.
I am pretty senior, so I see a lot of anxious personalities just focused on execution and "getting performance" out of the engineers. Often that means not treating them as adults. I think there is a lot of good talent here but no team feeling and pretty uninspiring culture
What's u r level? Principals engineer or beyond?
Can't answer that, but my observation holds for many levels here at Walmart

That sounds like passion. Not compassion. Though I love that culture a lot, specifically looking for places where employees are happy.
eBay.. truly employee centric company. Great benefits, supportive leaders, good TC. Family care leave is 12 paid weeks which covers care for spouse, kids, parents and in laws who need care after a hospitalization. Maternity leave is 24 weeks and paternity is 12 weeks paid. Good culture of technology while taking care of employees. From my experience and discussions with others, most teams fall under this description. If you like any position, I’ll be glad to refer you.
Thomson Reuters was the most carefree place I have ever worked. TC was shit though. They have an office in Sunnyvale.

Would you consider Affirm? Data science is core to our product and has the largest impact on our customers. We are in a hard space to be overtly compassionate but we have tried to be very ethical with our customers and we do thinks completely unheard of in the space (no fees, fixed interest rates, etc). Max Levchin is in a similar spot as you. He doesn't need to work, he is building Affirm for his vision around making the lending space ethical, which is awesome.
Thanks just checked it out. Seems interesting! I must specify though I do need to work! I just don't think optimising my TC is best for my happiness so looking at other parameters. For example, I am in San Jose so will also optimise for commute.

Salesforce - huge emphasis on volunteering, get VTO, up to 10k donation matching, PTO/WLB encouraged, good benefits, most employees are happy because culture is pretty employee friendly
Interesting. I've always had a strongly negative view of Salesforce based on the product, Benioff, and my limited interactions with employees. I guess it could be like Facebook where the internal reality doesn't match external perception.
Microsoft
Can you please elaborate why?
1. Went through personal troubles for about a year, Microsoft was super supportive. Same with others I heard about. 2. I never once encountered a single sinister or dishonest individual, among the hundreds I worked with. None who would intentionally do the wrong thing or implement suboptimal stuff. Might be resting and vesting, might take few weeks extra, but you know the person's honest. 3. Never once met a rude individual. Yes people get angry occasionally, people express disappointment, but all genuine feelings, nobody's rude by nature. 4. Largely no 'fakeass' people, pretending to be someone they're not. If TC or designation was not a concern, I would pick Microsoft, every single time.
